Cold Steel keeps up the level of worldbuilding and has a pretty interesting political narrative, but yeah the character interactions take a huge hit due to the Persona-esque format they take. It's really telling when some of the background school characters are more memorable then members of the main cast.

If you can find it for a decent price, I'd say it's still worth playing, especially if you are the type who appreciates the persistent worldbuilding between games.

The harem thing just doesn't work in a series that spans multiple games. You have a ton of characters to work with, so don't shoehorn them into some social link bullshit. That stuff is better in isolated games like Persona.

Playing through CS2 was kind of a chore because the characters just didn't have dynamics that are worth caring about since they're all reserved for snowflake Rean.

Tales games may have shit stories, but I like to think they're the gold standard when it comes to writing decent character dynamics.
