Here's an interesting little detail. When Gin and Sonoko are attacking, their whole bodies glow with light. When Sumi attacks she doesn't glow.

That doesn't change the fact that LWA's universes is much more light hearted than Sumi's. Its fiction and the characters are made to fit the universe. Akko doesn't really have to worry about death the way Sumi does because it would be strange for her to do so. It would be inserting a certain level of realism and some darker themes that don't fit into the show. As long as Akko truly believes with her heart magic happens and everything works out.

YuYuYu's setting is different in this regard. Death and failure is very much a real worry. YuYuYu deals not only with believing and staying strong, but also with the uncertainty if those efforts will really be enough. You're likely to succeed if you try is the what they live by because there is a chance of failure even when you give your all and being a hero is accepting this and staying strong even when things don't, and will not work out.

I think your overestimating her strong will. Yes she's determined but she also takes failure quite hard. She actually hasn't had very big failures. Most of the major events have worked out for her. Despite that look how down she got with a little bullying and not being able to preform magic that well. She has to constantly search for reaffirmation that she can even be shiny chariot. When she faces something that would be hard, she cuts corners and sort of expects things to work out. If she were Sumi's world, She would make a mistake and that mistake would have actual consequences. If one of her friends died because she did something rash, she would not be able to take that very well. But even more likely is she would probably get herself killed. In fact thats the problem with Akko's character. She passionate and strong willed but thats all she has. She doesn't have the mentality of say Dianna to back it up and thats whats holding her back.

Akko isn't perfect. Sometimes her failures get to her. But she started to get depressed after practising the same spell one hundred times. That's a lot of failure. When you consider that, it actually shows how emotionally strong she is. Someone like Sumi would have been discouraged way sooner.

Also, Diana has no mental fortitude whatsoever. See her reaction when she failed in episode 2 proves that much. She's not used to failure so she gets affected by it a lot more than Akko.

Akko is already a true hero. She has risked her life multiple times for her friends, has been praised for being altruistic despite her ambitions, and is already awakening the one item they need to solve all their problems. She's a baka hero of the likes of Gin and Shiratori. Sumi's cute but she can't even compare. She doesn't even stand out in her own story, and lets not even talk about what happens later on.
