It sounds silly, but I liked him most when he died. He really stepped up and took one for the team. He knew he would suffer and he knew he would die, but he was willing to do that for his friends and fellow Scouts. Everything before that felt as though he was several different characters across various arcs.

When you say, " His life doesn't mean anything to him", I strongly disagree with that sentiment.
His life was so valuable, and he measured it thus, that he thought it worth the lives of his friends, comrades and all their hopes and dreams. When he sacrificed himself, he illustrated the role of a Scout with exemplary bravery. He gave himself up to further the goals and wishes of those around him that he loved.
That's why, to me, his revival did nothing but wound is reputation which, with me, was already sub par.

This post is so condescending, but I'll bite.
I actually did quite well in my literature class. Enough to know you can't measure how good a character is based on their actions alone, because everyone is different and perceives characters in a variety of ways. As I said, what you might find amazing is what I might find boring.

Now, regarding Isayama's writing. Yes, he's not the best out there and it shows with Armin, but also with almost every other character he has created. They advance and in some cases, go back to zero. They also have many, many flaws and you know what? I actually appreciate that, it's somewhat realistic. Sad Armin isn't your flavor, but I bet your favorite shingeki isn't something special either.

Lastly, if you want to be an arsehole and think there's a common ground to agree upon in order to see which character is "good" or "bad" I guess the only thing you can rely on is to see how said character makes the plot advance. According to that, Armin would be quite the good character, since without him the story of these people would've ended back in Shinganshina. See? it doesn't really work that way.

That's a problem with most people, not just Arminfags. Also one of the reasons why Eren gets or at least used to get so much flak within the Western fanbase, despite being, in my opinion, a good MC for the stories. His flaws are hard to digest and sometimes make you want to punch him in the face rather than stick up for him, but it was completely intentional on the author's part and there's a realism to Isayama's depiction of an angry teenage boy lusting for change and freedom that is hard to deny.

I like the way you put it anon. I actually like Armin quite a bit and I thought his sacrifice was finally him coming full circle and realizing his worth as an individual, which led him to put his life on the line for an actual reason as opposed to the suicidal suggestions he used to make back when he thought of himself as a burden. 82 was really one of the best chapters in the Shiganshina arc and the manga as a whole, and the revival really hurt his character (on top of almost making me drop the mango) because there's virtually nowhere to go from there.

I understand how Isayama associates Armin with his childhood friend and the idea of innocence and wanted to protect it at all costs, but it's doing a massive disservice to the story to have him die and just come back like that. That's why I'm really hoping the anime does things differently once we get there.

Thank you, I'm glad you agree with how I see it. I honestly can't see the Anime being changed though, I think it would divide the fan base too much and give a lot of people legitimate reasons to doubt Isayama as a trustworthy creator moving forward.

How his death and revival worked irked me greatly because I've never been a fan of Armin, I prefer Rico and some of the more veteran Scouts and characters. But in the moment when Armin died, I really felt something for him. Then he started to somehow breath and what I felt vanished to be replaced with incredulity. I just hope that it's all worth it in the end.
