It's unclear. The anime director clearly didn't understand, since they cut out the most important Rem romance scenes, but the author's character profile for Rem was twice as long as the others. It just goes on about how her role ended up surpassing the author's expectations, and transforming the entire surface of the story and Subaru's characterization from his original plans.

Which is really why I'm hoping they don't continue pretending that Subaru's confession never happened in the LN, which seems to have rewritten a few scenes to hide things the anime didn't include.

Because I'll say it now. Rem's influence played a large role in making the series as enjoyable as it is, even after she's gone.

I'm just not into the whole child romance thing that comes up too often. At this point, I think Clind might be Tappei's self-insert.

From a really quick check: during the carriage ride in LN10 Subaru tells Emilia that Rem is as important to him as Emilia (I'm reading the word as 'important' but it might be something closer to 'precious' or 'dear' so those might be more accurate I dunno). Followed by inner monologue where he thinks that Rem came to occupy an overly large portion of his heart and "without exaggeration, his feelings (toward her) were identical/similar in scale to his feelings towards Emilia".

This is followed by Emilia asking Subaru "you understand you're being soooo selfish right?" which is pretty self-evident in meaning unless you think Emilia is dumb enough to believe that Subaru can't have more than one 'friend' he cares about.

Also in LN11 the modified Subaru visits sleeping Rem scene still has these lines:

Because when Subaru was comforting Emilia he was actually wanting to talk to Puck to where Puck said that he has to comfort his daughter or else. While also being in a bet with Roswaal to save sanctuary on this loop. Emilia is one of the cornerstones to saving Sanctuary as Echidna kicked him out of the trials leaving only Emilia to pass all 3. Not to mention the confession could have been completely prevented if Subaru just followed Emilia's wishes to stay by her bedside only to have Subaru leave shortly after she fell asleep. While Rem was due to a prank she wanted to play on Subaru. But when it came to Emilia it was because Emilia was not convinced by his confession to her, which forced Subaru's hand as she is needed for a number of things.

Well, that's the exact point I was making. The original text directly referred to Rem as a girl he loved. Now it doesn't. It says everything but that, and does make it extremely obvious, but it's still odd that it no longer states it directly.

Editors have authority. Even if he's trying to cut down on arc 4, the editor has a say on what will be cut out, and in this case the overly brutal scenes as well as his spergs for Rem are being cut down on.

I don't think it's that bad. Just a bit concerning, but it all depends on how it turns out. Personally, I don't like how the changes impact Subaru's characterization, so I wanted to make people aware of them. I still expect they'll have Subaru clearly state it later on, but additional scenes will probably have to be added or reworked as a result.

Well yes. I'm also disappointed that he never strangled Roswaal or got an eye punched out. It feels weird to me that Echidna was able to contact him before he ever reached Sanctuary. It's doubly odd that that certain Leweses seem to already have special names and outfits.

So? Otherwise, what would be the point of the love triangle then if it was so lopsided and obvious and it was way too easy to know who Subaru's true love interest really is? Subaru and Emilia has been lacking their own notable scenes to build up their romantic relationship so it makes sense why they would make more Subaru x Emilia scenes in the LN to compensate for their lackluster relationship development so far.
