Standard arc was good but not Dark Signers good. You have to remember though, that Dark Signers was a full completed arc of events and climax. If the continuity of Arc V was the same quality as the standard arc, it may have been better, but that was not the case.

That's what I'm trying to get across.

The story felt like it was finally going somewhere with MCS round 2 and the Battle Royale, and was engaging (making up somewhat for everything else questionable about it), but the duel writing itself was pretty lacking in what was supposed to be the most exciting arc in Standard. Except for Yuya vs Reiji and maybe Yuya vs Sora, which were right up at the end.

At the very least. I learned how many anons actually liked the card game and anime

In Zexal Universe, I'd say he's definetely up there after he obtains Prime Photon Dragon.
If we count Shark as a rival though, I'd say Nasch using Barian Hope is stronger than Kaito, although he's more of a boss character than a rival at that point.

As for Reiji, its really hard to say how he'd compete with the other rivals since he barely had a decent 1 VS 1 duel in the latter half of Arc-V, and that duel against Reira pretty much demonstrated nothing for his character.

If 5D's 1-64 is just mediocre (I wouldn't really argue the opposite), then Arc-V's Standard is sub-par, since the entire thing started as a comparison. I'm not quite so invested I'd nitpick everything, but even in the 'hypest' part of the show there were inconsistencies and questionable things that could go toe-to-toe with whatever little thing you could dig out of your nose about Dark Signers.

Like Yuya and Gon (you could argue Yuya was close to passing out, but Gon was wide awake) KNOWING Yuzu is potentially in trouble somewhere out there in the city, but stopping to have a pleasure nap and a leisurely breakfast before going out to look for her. Or when Yugo killed Yuto over a misunderstanding of a name pun.

The VA work is good, but the script sounds like LK wrote parts of it and an 8-year-old wrote the rest. They clearly had fun, but it ain't the same.

Arguably the dub fixed a couple of problems the original script had, but it introduces its own problems so ultimately the original is better in every way.

Aside Odd-Eyes (and its evolutions except hybrids), most dragons in Arc-V have nice designs. Dark Rebellion and Clear Wing are awesome and Starving Venom has a distinct ''corrupt'' feel in it (which is probably intentional, for when one compares her to the other dragons).

Arc-V was genuinely entertaining up to some point during Synchro, then it kept being bearable at least until a later point in Synchro too, then it became a trainwreck that got progressively worse and worse, to the point it became entertaining again, in the same way it's entertaining to see a gas station burning between an orphanage and a clown school.
