Nagano used vectoring on Gothicmade's animation to make it work in 4K resolution.

That's about the max extent I want flash in my Chinese cartoons.
>>
>>154661286

The 'web-gen' is the future, and places like Science SARU and Studio Colorido are some of the first to realise that the cumbersome back-and-forth of the usual, archaic production line endemic of the Japanese animation industry hinders efficiency.

Churning at that speed projects of that apparent high quality is their proof.
>>
>>154663895
The problem isn't hand-drawn animation, it's the production process where animators get paid pennies per frame instead of by wage and are told to finish ALL key frames before sending it to in-betweeners instead of sending it by parts. As a result everything is rushed and generally poor quality. It's a logistics problem, not a technical one.

I assume there's not too many and the only vocal ones just make threads like these to get people's attention for some reason. The clip looks okay so far, I don't care if you call people "plebs" for this.

Was Thunderbolt even mastered in 4K? Recently a bunch of movies have been getting the upscale treatment (like Doraemon) for rerelease in theaters but 4k was clearly not their native resolution.
>>
>>154665813
Thunderbolt was made in native 4k, IIRC, but the sound design was like that of your typical anime since it was originally an ONA. Gothicmade used Dolby Atmos 9.1 since it was originally a theatrical release, and even by Atmos standards that's a bit over-the-top. It would be possible to fit it in a UHD BD, but it would also be more challenging. Doesn't help that Nagano is super anal about this shit.

Native 4K.
>>
>>154664698

Dude, that is exactly what I was referring to with "archaic production line". Their efficiency comes from the nearly all-digital workflow, not the 'tweening' or auto-tools. As Aya Suzuki mentions about Ping Pong The Animation:

>I worked from home in London, doing everything by email and skype. There was no rejection of digital animation, unlike most anime studios. [In contrast to American and European studios, anime studios still largely work on paper.]
>>
>>154666402
It wouldn't be hard to compress it, the problem is that most people don't own a Dolby Atmos surround sound system, and it's impossible to compress into just two speakers without losing much in the process.

Has any movie done this before?
>>
>>154666454
Looks upscaled.
>>
Science Saru is just baiting for more Disney contract work since they realized it pays way better than to hope enough virgins spent their neetbux on overpriced BDs.
>>
>>154666810
It's vectored, native 4k.
>>
>>154661286
Jeez, they've successfully killed off much of what makes Ohira's animation unique. The rough, warping lines are all gone in the final product.

I would watch a toilet paper ad if it was by Yuasa.
Easily in the top 3 of alive anime directors.
>>
>>154666575
It would be hard to compress, because most Dolby Atmos home setups are designed to be at 5.1, not 9.1. 9.1 would require a lot more speakers.
>>
>>154665349
stick to a/z
>>
https://twitter.com/sciencesaru/status/841914094307446784

Animation process:
Raw key animation → Corrections by director → Corrections by animation supervisor → Flash → Colours → Final product

Ohira's original work gets filtered through so many processes to the point where his unique style is barely evident. Yuasa's usage of Flash is cancer.
>>
>>154663895
There is nothing wrong with digital animation, and Science Saru isn't the only studio embracing technology. However, their approach to digital animation so far creates a very sterile look that suffocates the artist's hand due to the way the studio likes to use Flash.
>>
>they used the exact same technology in Ping Pong
>it was okay then because muh squiggly lines
>now its flat lines
>suddenly not okay
>>
>>154667136
What does a/z have to do with disliking Tomino?
>>
>>154667484
Clean lines with no variation in line weight is visually boring.
>>
>>154667486
>hi i've only been on /a/ for a month
>>
>>154667486
It's a meme. G-Reco aired at the same time as A/Z. Aldnoah also advertised itself as the work that would surpass Gundam (or something like that). Thus, whenever someone complained about Tomino and/or G-Reco while the shows were airing, G-reco fanboys told the complainers to stick to A/Z, implying the complainers are too dumb for G-reco and garbage like A/Z is perfect for that kind of stupid people
>>
>>154667619
And it turned out that they were both shit.
How ironic.
>>
>>154667599
No I'm perfectly aware of that retarded meme. I just think no one cares anymore that another shitty mecha show aired at the same time as G-Reco.
>>
>>154667725
/m/, the board where most G-Reco fanboys come from loves to reuse old as fuck memes for shitposting over and over. It's ridiculous how much shitty shitposting memes get repeated over there
>>
>>154667187

Yeah recognized two days after the tweet, and only after anitwitter people like Ashita pointed it out. Being barely evident doesn't matter in your case then, or for many others.

Look, many won't even recognise the nuanced differences of Mr. Ohira Vs. Shinji Hashimoto as a prime example, but that doesn't make the intended result any less valuable. When it has mattered for the project to conserve the original line-work of rough KA, it has been left as is (like on his Ping Pong The Animation OP), so if that specific scene was intended as is, then the prerogative of the checker to correct it isn't at odds with Mr. Ohira's talent on display but the onus is with Mr. Ohira to work within the limitations imposed by SB and direction for the cut.

Not every instance of a work should stroke personal egos, there are times for a balance of any input (wherever it comes from).
>>
>>154668040
Ohira or not, people have noticed a clear downgrade in style when comparing the raw key animation to the final product. What's the point of getting someone like Ohira to do work when in the end so much of what makes his style unique is stripped out? I agree that animators need to fit their work for most of the part but someone like Ohira is supposed to be idiosyncratic. Even his more restrained work manages to call attention to itself without being too imposing.
>>
>>154668293
Could be worse. Could be like what Miyazaki did to Ohira when he was working on Howl's.
>>
>>154668293

Well, I think it certainly retains some of that idiosyncrasy when it hasn't been completely neutered.

Would you say his The Wind Rises work was stripped out of all its personality even though it is still recognisable after the corrections by Mr. Miyazaki (that corrects EVERYTHING he touches)? I'd say this level of conforming is at least comparable, if not less restrictive.
>>
>>154668636
(cont.)

Now, what they did to Seiya Numata's work on Kannagi. THAT is a true disgrace, completely handicapping acts of the expressiveness is much more of a crime than trying to integrate Mr. Ohira's animation into the posted scene.
>>
>>154668636
>>154668451
Ohira's work in Miyazaki's film still manages to retain some of its personality despite corrections. What Yuasa has done here due to Flash suppresses it further. My main gripe is with the line art being cleaned up so much that it loses so much of its original personality. At least in Miyazaki films you can still see there's something unique going on even if the character drawings are a lot more in line with the established designs.

The first looks absolutely terrible though, the different poses he animated towards are much too visible making it look unnatural as fuck. The second isn't great but it's less disturbing.
>>
>>154670752
But anime sales are completely not dependent on the animators involved, so why would the industry be "in need" of them?
Just say that 3 western sakugafag that contribute 0 to the industry want more of them.

It had been years since the Ping Pong so I'm on fucking cloud nine that not only are we getting two Yuasa movies this year but also a Devilman adaptation next year. Normally I'd be annoyed at the shitposting, but honestly, I'm too damn happy to give a shit right now.

Saying there's a style or technique that shouldn't be used in anime is what's always been the cancer of the industry. Let Trigger have their chock-block minimalist animation, Science Saru their flash animation, Shaft have their slide shows with maccaronis stuck to it, Bones focus on action animation and kyoani on character animation. The lack of variety has alwas been suffocating anime, even though animation is a medium that has massive potential for it. Japan stil is decades behind western stuff, while considering the amount of it and prestige it has in the country compared to it in the states, it could be fuckin centuries ahead.
>>

How can one studio be so inventive?
>>
