As an American who lives just below the mason dixon line, I would probably rank my top three for fast food like this:
Five Guys: They can't be beat as far as sit down and eat quickly kinds of burgers go. The hint of peanuts in the fries is to die for, there are so many of them, it takes "Have it your way" more seriously than Burger King ever did.
Hardees: A rather large amount of food for a very appealing price. It's quantity over quality, but it doesn't always sacrifice a whole lot of quality.
Taco Bell: Hardees, but more mexican. And less food.

McD's and BK are pretty common here and maybe you'll find the occasional Subway, Taco Bell or even Pizza Hut if you travel through ten different cities first but I have never even seen a KFC once in my life. Their McDonalds are almost like a "family restaurant" (what we'd call a diner, for example like a Denny's) but with a more limited menu and much cheaper prices for food. You can get a steak dinner at a family restaurant, but it will cost you $12 or so - a burger might run anywhere from $3-5, depending on what's on it. At McDonalds, they still have the value menu, so you can get a cheeseburger and Coke for the equivalent of about $2.50. And since there are no formal waiters/waitresses, nobody is going to come around and bother you to order something if you've overstayed your welcome during a busy time of the day.
