So basically she and her whole family has AIDS, her parents die, her sister dies and then she dies too. I understand why people would cry about it. I'm pretty emotional so I would probably cry too. But illness and death is disgustingly cheap trope especially when it hits secondary character. Fuck SAO, I respect it even less now.

The first episode covers the entire first volume of the manga. If you have time I recommend watching just the first episode, it won awards and shit and the use of music really enhances the entire scene. Its great and heart crushing.

But that's just the thing. You're applying something we know in the real world as tragic in order to get "feels" from the audience based on a connection to those aspects alone. It's like seeing a characters parent die and expecting us to be sad even though we never really establish their connection beyond the surface level.

Aids, cancer, lose of loved ones are all terribly tragic things but our sense of sorrow should come from the character not the tools. It's basically holding up a sign that says "FEEL SAD NOW" hence it's cheap story telling.

Caesar's death in the animated adaptation of Battle Tendency.

I don't know how it happened. I don't know why it happened. I knew it was coming since I read the manga (which I got through unscathed). Not sure whether it was the music for the scene, that final wailing, or the transition to the somber section of 'Roundabout' that did it, but something made my eyes water.

I'm not too proud of it. It happened. Now off to my corner of shame.
