On the other hand, I'm interested to see how Itagaki has Musashi deal with being shot at with modern weapons, surrounded and out in the open. I don't think he's ever had anyone dodge bullets, even Yujiro in Vietnam used hide and strike tactics.

The one thing that bothered me was how much of a gruesome beating Jack gave him at the end. They should've been scraping what was left of Motobe off of that tree for weeks, but instead he just dusts himself off and memes Jack to death like it's no big deal. I mean for God's sake, the tree's being uprooted!

Other than that yeah, it was really enjoyable. I do enjoy Motobe's antics but it's just disappointing seeing Jack job like that.

Have you even been reading the manga? First, he went off to imagination-train in his basement for an unknown period of time. Then, he met with Doppo, they watched the Pickle and Motobe fights, and then joined Doppo and Katsumi in [whatever the fuck you want to call what they were doing] in their dojo. Then he left, and began to psychologically prep himself, too. There's like a 95% chance that Baki's going to disrupt the war.

I've finished reading New Grappler Baki and I have to say it was an interesting experience. Since I don't know the outcome of the tournament from the first series aside from "Baki won" there were a couple characters I didn't know but there is enough information for me to get what they are about. The opening is really good though, 5 deadly criminals all escape at the same time. They aren't strictly speaking martial artists but the kind of person who is ready to fight at any time at any place. The first few encounters are really tense and the types of tools employed by Dorian and Sikorski really intimidate. I'm not hugely invested in Baki as a character so him not being the focus while the other fighters fight it out didn't bother me. And I liked the running sub-plot of Baki's relationship because it gave me Pic related as a great moment. I knew it was coming and my sides were lauched into orbit when it happened. I expected Yujiro to burst through the ceiling but this was 10x better.

But then the arc took a nose dive in quality when rematches started happening and by the time Yanagi got his beatdown by Motobe there wasn't much interesting stuff going on. The prisoners went from being these huge threats to characters that were getting beat down by whoever challenged them. Dorian was a fitting defeat, but Yanagi, Speck, and Sikorski were really underwhelming and humiliating.

Thankfully the Kaioh tournament brought things back up. And it was back to good fights. Ended a little weird with the Old Man killing himself to preserve his victory but his talk with Yujiro kept it clean. I also wasn't expecting Muhammad Ali and was worried when Sr. met Yujiro that he was going to be disrespected (I grew up watching VHS tapes of Ali's fights, I used to be a boxing fan). I was actually touched when Yujiro actually had a deep respect to someone weaker than himself.

Assuming you're going on to the third series: Che's intermingled Spanish, Spanish references and general 'foreignness' are all made-up; none of the "pibe"-type crap is in the raw. You really ought to know that *before* reading it; I imagine it can only help.

Always interesting to hear/read a fresh perspective from a new reader though, so thank you for that.

But I was less than thrilled with how badly Ali Jr. got beat. This guy had been around for two arcs touting this imperfect new boxing style and he jobs out to Baki in one hit. Plus the beatdown by Doppo and the Judo guy and I wondered why he even got a fight if Baki at this point can no-sell anyone he fights. When it happened during the Kaioh tournement I didn't mind it but man was that rough. Jr. Crying in the hallway afterwards hit hard. As a side note, Ali Sr. is probably the most well proportioned figure this artist has drawn. No crazy muscles it looks like a more accurate human anatomy.

Now I'm 1/3 of the way through Son of Ogre and I have a question. When did Baki become such a massive dick? From the original series I knew him as the kind of guy who fought someone and established a bond of respect and admiration whether he won or loss. Now he beats people and has nothing between them. He antagonizes others almost needlessly. And expecially in this prison, when Che left discreetly he just waltzes out the front door not to mention kidnapping the president. I hate to say it but Baki has become his father and I find his father to be a boring antagonist. I'm almost rooting against him at this point.

It was also weird spending 10 chapters watching Baki fight a imaginary mantis but if the few pages that get spammed in OPT tell me anything, this is just the tip of the iceberg for imagination powers.

Also why has Olivia not used any Judo? He's got this turtle form I'm reading now but he spent some time with the judo guy and still just slaps people around with brute strength.

I'm still sold on the series. It's definitely an older vintage of Shounen but I can enjoy it. But I don't know what to think of Baki as a character. He's become less interesting than the people that fight around him. I kind of expected Baki vs Yujiro to be something that happens immediately but I'm not even 1/3 through the third series and it's not in sight.

Just trying to wrap my head around some things. The writing takes slumps at times and I feel like there are too few characters to do what the author tried to do with New Grappler Baki. People like Doppo win, lose, come back and say they weren't going all out, win brutally, and then repeat the process with the next opponent. Meanwhile Baki never loses and is the wunderkin of fighting now but for some reason has to wait to fight his own father who recognizes him while he fucks off to Africa to kill prehistoric elephant. (which is cool don't get me wrong)

When the prisoners started losing the series started to deflate a bit and I'm feeling it now that Baki is fighting Olivia. And again. why doesn't Olivia use Judo? Seriously, this is the second time he's really fought and not a technique in sight.

I'm still hooked but man is this writing prone to meandering. Maybe it's because it was a shounen series and if Kinnikuman is any bar of comparison it's because it's trying to pad things out. Still, glad I could pick this up and get something out of it. Thanks for getting me into this.

Err, it did happen, if you didn't know. I don't really want you to read it, but there's a volume of Kozue and Baki having sex. It was published in a different magazine because lolexplicit. I don't recall there being an easy place from which to download it beyond MK, so I'm sticking it on mega for you, should you truly want to read it. But many people who have read it will say that it's hilarious, embarrassing, ruins whatever, etc - so be warned.

It's the end battle of the third series, and takes like 100+ chapters. Now is a weird time to pick up Baki, because it seems like the four series are continuous - they're really not. As I recall, there was even a 2-year gap in real life between the third and fourth series. The end of the third series is the climax of the story that has progressed since the beginning of Grappler Baki. The fourth series is, for lack of a better term, the start of a new adventure.

That's key to Oliva's character: he doesn't really know any technique. His 'gimmick', as it were, is simply the sheer size of his muscles.

I get that, but it's weird that they introduce the guy who is a older, frailer man who can manhandle him and don't have Olivia learn anything from it. Were this any other series I'd expect Olivia to keep using brute force and whe he meets a tougher opponent he pulls out "that" which is some fundamental Judo technique dialed up to 11 due to his sheer strength. Itagaki took the time to show that Olivia's pure strength isn't the only facet of fighting that matters and then forgets it and has him pound Che Guiverra into the dirt and walk off singing YOHOHO.
