It was no surprise that it became sexual, it's obvious their feelings were getting more romantic over time. It was just a surprise that they didn't show more of them falling for each other, the first kiss etc, but the mangaka probably assumes some maturity in the audience and doesn't want to make a big dramatic show out of every romantic development.
