In Zexal, half the duels take place on Earth. The latter half the war between ''heaven and hell'' gets to bigger proportions and they need to travel to their realms. It also shows Shadow Games in the past before the story.
Basically, there are two worlds, Barian and Astral. If you die virtuous you go to Astral world, if you are filled with dark emotions like hatred or regret, you go to Barian world. The war between them is ocurring and shit and later in the story they needed to travel to those worlds and fight there for different reasons.
When showcasing the past lives of Barian Emperors, it is shown one of them was a wise King and another a Mad Prince. The Mad Prince used the power of darkness to start a Shadow Game with monsters being destroyed having impact on the army. The Mad Prince destroyed all the monsters in the King's deck, but lost the duel. Conversely, the King won, but lost his entire kingdom in one go, which reincarnated in Barian.
So yeah, in Zexal there was a shadow game.

In Arc-V, the chronology is separated from previous series (It's implied both Zexal and 5D's branch off after GX, while Arc-V is its own continuity).
There are no Shadow Games per se in Arc-V, but duelists from other dimensions have technology to inflict real damage and to seal people in cards. This becomes a problem because Fusion Dimensions (which is based on GX and has alternate characters from GX) made Duel Academy become a militar school and attacked the other dimensions. Majority of the people in Xyz Dimension (based on Zexal's world, therefore a more pacific one) were sealed into cards and the survivors started to retaliate or travel to other dimensions to find a way to fight back.

Vrains will still happen and all that is known is that there is a virtual reality, but give them like 2 seasons and people will start summoning monsters in real life, killing each other and fucking shit up.

Xyz didn't prevent you from playing Triple Quasar Decks.
Pendulums didn't prevent you from making 3 Xyz monsters in a turn (in fact, they actually helped in that regard quite a bit).
Links make even dropping a single Quasar extremely difficult, severely inhibit multiple Xyz summons, and prevent you from penduluming 5 from the extra deck. Links have singlehandedly destroyed an uncountable number of strategies and decks, something no new summon method has done before.

Well, at least out of this recent mess it's pretty much confirmed Yuya was actually Zarc's main fragment, which may explain Magicians and his glowing eyes being different.
