While I was living in Japan I was paying about ￥50000 a month for rent (about $450). That made about $4500 for rent a year. I could get away with spending $50 on food a week and travel cost my about 30$ a week. Overall living costs were close to about $100 a week and $5000 a year.

I was earning about $20000 a year as a teacher.

I was eating healthy food though, many Japanese people just eat cup ramen which costs about $20 a week for all meals.

Animators barely scrape by per year with their salary, but they don't have much of a life. A weekly shonen jump is a luxury for them.
