She's a complete product of the system. I feel like she genuilely loves the kids but in a way a farmer might love his cows, or in the way you might love a dog. She considers it normal to care for them, but she also considers it natural to do so so the demons are satisfied when they're sold as cattle. Norman empathizing with her even though he's "just" a product to be shipped with probably genuilely surprised her, and it's obvious she respects him a lot beyond that partly because of it.

Some people from other sites say mama is actually trying to help Norman but, how can she help him without having to response to demons for his disappearance?
That said, IMO, the only way for that theory to be true is that mama actually recomended the demons that Norman could be useful for some superior reason (like breeder, scientist, researcher, etc, etc). And if that end up being true, I bet Norman will have to falseflag in favor of demons to not being insta-killed and maybe it'll pass a lot of time until we see him again.
I can already see it. Norman working in the shadows to let Ema, Ray and cia to escape, so they find the last human resistance in this world (using the misterious pen), a timeskip happens, and when Norman finally appears again he's mindbroken because of all he had to endure, and he's finally pushed into the abyss when he realizes Emma is now in love with Ray (which is completely reasonable because of all that time separated), so he goes full Anakin skywalker and embrace the darkside.

Except she also did it in private and at times any sort of possible twist about her motives wouldn't get leaked out to authorities. Well, they're still children but if they escape (which will certainly happen at some point), they will grow and romantic feelings might be eventually developed considering they'll be adults or at least teenagers in a eventual timeskip.
Maybe talk about romance now is unnecessary, but the circumstances can always change. And even if Norman is separated from Ema, he literally stated that he loves Ema, and I doubt it will change anytime soon, in fact, that love might be the only fuel that keep Norman struggling in the hell of a world that expect him if he's not killed.

Her going out of her way to scare / hurt Emma into not blowing the cover, her still having an antagonistic role in private or when Emma wasn't putting everything in jeopardy is another. But, I can't help but think Norman isn't going to be killed only because the way this chapter ended. Too many roundabouts and ambiguity. If the author wants Norman dead, the poor kid will be already dead in this chapter.
We'll find out next chapter but the thing is clear now:
- If Norman dies the next chapter. Mama is certainly not in the good side, best case scenario she is neutral, like an emotionless machine.
- If Norman survives for some reason, that pretty much confirm Mama is somehow attached to the kids and she'll try to help them in some way, maybe not all the kids will recieve this help but at least she won't be labeled as a cruel empty broken human being anymore.
