This is delusion.
I didn't like reading about him because he wasn't interesting, but for the Relationship, he was another confirmation that Holo wouldn't lose interest in Lawrence just because another (to her) interesting character is around. For a relationship that was supposed to end in marriage, is was an important to establish that it wasn't just working because Holo was lonely and had noone else.
