Everyone feels a bit differently about it. The argument you see often is that they're display pieces and how they look is most important.

Personally, I don't buy figs from series I'm not familiar with. I've come very close a couple times, but treat it as a general rule and it saves me money usually. My collection works as an expression of the franchises I'm a fan of and I've got more attachment to figures of characters I like.

Up to you how you want to treat it though. I don't really disagree with the former line of thought either.
