The entire premise of the show boils down to "Japan is the greatest and can't do anything bad, all other countries are shit." Personally, I disliked it because it very quickly devolved into "Magical waifu quest 9000", making very little use of it's unique setting, but if you end up liking it more power to you. Give it the 3 episode rule and stop watching if you stop having fun.

I should add- The Anime is an adaptation of a Manga, which is an adaptation of a LN, which is an adaptation of a web novel written by an officer in the JGSDF, so the whole "Japan strong" song and dance is understandable if not annoying. The worst part, though, is that there is a good story underneath, shining out through the cracks in the caked-on shit that is the main narrative. For instance, an Elf in a bar telling a friend about her witnessing a "Man in green" casting the spell "Bak'blast clir" with his "Great metal wand" (she saw a soldier fire a panzerfaust 3 at a Dragon). Or when token mage waifu reads physics textbooks, discovers chemistry, and develops explosion magic. Or, hell, any one of the handful of good combat scenes you can look up on youtube. With competent direction, and an anime-original plot, this could have been great.

As far as I know the original novels and the LNs are 99.9% identical, they just split them in half for each LN.

Translations exist, but they only go up to LN vol. 8 and they're missing vol. 6, because the translators are working from Chinese translated raws and not Japanese ones and apparently they can't find Chinese raws for the missing volumes.

I've said this before, but I think a lot of the dissatisfaction with GATE comes from watching the series from a /k/ perspective.

If you approach it as a relatively typical isekai harem wish fulfillment series, but with the twist of being intended for an older than normal audience, and think of all the JSDF stuff as window dressing, the series becomes a lot more palatable.

Watching the show before dropping it, it felt like there was no opposition to Japan. Invade new world, decimate everything, can't be touched.

Foreign nations can't invade Japan cuz violation of rights. Also most boring parts of the show happen when they are in real world

I actually thought GATE was relatively light on the JAPAN STRONK bullshit after reading the novels.

It's more glaring because it's modern and takes place in the real world, but if you subtract that factor it's pretty minor compared to anime's history of inserting OP Japanese people into every possible historical situation, their endless worship and glorification of Samurai and katana, etc. I'd say, as a recent example, that Drifters is vastly worse about it than GATE is.
