To be fair, this is one of the few authors I've seen from Japan with some level knowledge of bodybuilding and lifting at all. Even if he doesn't get things right 100% of the time, his heart is still in it. I wonder if there's a way to give him feedback about Danberu.

Yeah. Give that a go. I used to hate swimming, had a few bad experiences as a kid, but eventually I got tired of sucking at it so I signed up for a course. By the end I was jumping off of the high dive with no problem. First time was rough, but it was all downhill after that.

I was too afraid to go to the gym at first to and have almost no problems anymore. It should be the same for the free weights area and bench press is literally the worst there. Once I manage the bench press, the rest will be easy.

my opinion on lat pulldown is mixed

Id say its a good exercise but I personally only do it occasionally. I prefer chin ups, pull backs (something similar to rows) and lat iso rotation. trains lat ROM more evenly and lat pulldown is kinda tedious and redundant

I noticed repeated BCAA shilling in this manga

don't take BCAA it's a waste of money. or rather only take it when you are an endurance athlete such as marathon runner. then it will slightly increase the time till you reach fatigue

as an anaerobic athlete aka weightlifter you will get no benefits from BCAAs

the only supplement I'd recommend is creatine. it actually increases your gains a bit. apart from that HMB especially when you're cutting because it increases muscle retention by a lot and in a meta study was listed as the second of only two effective supplements (below creatine) of dozens of supplements. all other supplements have little or no impact on your gains and are a waste of money in that regard

if you want to get additional supplements, instead of BCAAs how about omega 3, multivitamin, vitamin d and maybe even things like magnesium. if you know where to buy them they are dirt cheap and the multivitamin I take is not just a shitty regular one (dont get normal grocery or pharmacy multivitamins, theyre shit and overpriced) but one adjusted to weightlifting with dozens of other things in it

you make a good point of course but bench pressing is proportionally more common as well from what I have experienced anecdotally. many people get shoulder issues and there are also elbow or wrist injuries. of course deadlift injuries, albeit rarer, tend to be more severe. however, take into consideration that deadlifts are the best treatment against backpain that probably exists, better than any medication or operations

a somewhat close friend of mine got dislocated disk from deads tho. he has genetically weak back and he chronically overtrained, lifted too heavy and had shitty form. but he recovered from it within a year. shoulder injuries you sometimes can't recover from. unfortunately I have shoulder issues myself

Seems someone in here likes to comment on the more exaggerated/entertainment value of this manga instead of it being a biology tome. I'm glad you still like it enough, though. There are ways to justify, or debunk, all the "myths" but giving out options and keeping people safe is good for motivations. Also, dead lifts lead to snap city if you do it wrong, everyone knows this. The author explicitly said dead lifts are a dangerous exercise "when done without proper form." I don't think a beginner's muscle training lewd manga is gonna start suggesting 2 pages of cute girls saying "LIFT HEAVY WEIGHT BY PULLING IT OFF THE GROUND, IT'S A BACK EXERCISE!" That'd get him cancelled.

Good to hear you're getting some core work in! Planks are deceptively easy and surprisingly taxing for how simple it is. Doing planks is definitely going to grant you strength and firmness in your core and back and arms and butt and even legs. I'll say, while you're increasing strength and endurance to your abs, maybe even a little size...the definition or "getting slowly visible" is 90% loss of body fat: your calorie count is the big key on that.

Abs aren't like biceps or chest or glutes which grow big and fast when you lift in short heavy bursts. They grow very little and very slowly and require training from every angle. Abs are made in the kitchen, not the gym.

Your first month of deadlifting should probably be with a trainer/lifter who knows what he's doing and what to look for. Reading about and performing are different things.

It's not bad at low weight, but spinal injuries are bad news. /fit/ might love to talk to you about deadlifts, though.

Oh you certainly can, and you don't need to pay someone or something as a "trainer." Just that effective deadlifting is with max weight possible, not for reps, and that should be done once you're comfortable and proven to do it safely.

I'm sure a simple search of "How to Perform Deadlift" on youtube even should help. Let's see.

I say this because before dedicating to muscle building, you want to cut, and then go for a bulk if you want.
If you don't know what are compounds, they're exercises that involve more muscles than focusing on one, like deads, bench, overhead press, push ups and many others

WHAT you eat is technically unimportant when it comes to weight loss/gain.

Eat all the broccoli you want; it ain't gonna match up to the Snickers bar you should have avoided. Water is wonderful! It's great for your body and you need it! So stop drinking 2 L of Coke, which is really bad for you.

Stop drinking alcohol, especially beer or wine.
Stop drinking soda.
Stop eating candy.
Stop overeating.

Doing just that will probably help you lose 20kg and add another 15 years of your life alone.

Based on personal experience I kind of want to recommend making sure your core is where it needs to be first. I struggled with back pain for a long time and when I finally went to a good physical therapist he told me I have an irritated disc in my back because my transversus abdominis isn't supporting my back properly. Try looking into some transversus exercises (because I really don't think people talk enough about it)and working on having good posture both when sitting and standing to start with if you're worried.

The dead lift isn't super complicated. There are tons of videos about form on youtube, and tons of websites that talk about it.

You can video yourself from the side to see if you're keeping on form, and you can always ask for comments on the video by showing it on /fit/ and asking for a form check.

Start off with light weight and concentrate on form, then progress your working load by 10 lbs a session. You will be OK so long as you are not in a hurry to do the lift and forget your fundamentals, just the same as any other lift.

So how long should one rest if, God forbid, you overtrain? I had to take a week off from my usual routines at the end of February, because I could feel my body just losing strength all over, and I was feeling tired, aching and just miserable as fuck, no matter how much effort I put into it. I've gotten back to it now, but I still don't completely perform at my peak, so I was wondering if a week off was really enough to recover?

I wish that this series would cover overtraining too at some point. It's an important thing to consider.

Nebulous word. You'll have to define that term. Broken bone? Torn ligament? Sheared joint? Loss of consciousness? DOMS? Dehydrated? Slept in too late?

The symptoms you describe doesn't sound like over-training. It sounds like under-eating, actually. It's fine to relax the pace if you feel that tiredness is from movement, like your endurance is waned with a lowered upper-limit. After all, "over" can mean "warm-up" to someone else. My suggestion is discover the cause of you lack of motivation. Working out doesn't necessarily make you feel pumped at all times, nor does it guarantee overall mood improvement (rather, erasing depression). But when you have ENERGY, and energy comes from what you take in, all the healing has something to use.

No broken places, except some minor complaints from my back the last time I did squats with free weights. I didn't check my form that time. It's just that my muscles felt so completely worn out and drained, and like, burning during the worst of it. I just couldn't keep going anymore. Definitely some sort of fatigue.

My caloric intake should be in order. When I started a few years back, I was 213 lbs. I'm now at 233 and doing pull-ups with this weight no problemo, until recently.

...I've seen a lot of manga discussion on this board of people casually saying "anime when." Things like Dungeon Meshi anime never, pls and I couldn't help feel like my insides were boiling.

...but this manga, when it's got another volume, I might actually think that's pretty great.
1 Season, 6-12 episodes. How long are episodes? 18 minutes? 20 minutes? This manga could be split in half, per episode. After episode 1 or 2, one chapter per half.
Title cards with the chapter art, opening and endings of the girls showing their hobbies and backgrounds and Machio happy at the gym.
The commercial break hits, there's a couple different bumpers it runs through:
1) Hibiki eating something
2) The Silverman's Gym girls exercising (doing a lift, cycling, toweling after a shower, something like that)
3) Machio in his tracksuit smiling, clothes bursts apart and he starts poses with a completely unchanged face as the girls dead-eye
4) Sensei rummaging or hiding in her cosplay as Akemi, Ayaka and Hibiki are out on the town
Returns back to the episode, but it's a new chapter - a new lift. Maybe some episodes are the longer chapters like the school festival or character introductions (Ayaka's introduction, Sensei's introduction).

Season 1, done. Easy to animate, easy to fill time since you have to do reps and that's an easy 15-20 seconds there, lots of reaction shots, lots of easy environments to draw and the LEARNING and the CHARACTERS are what drive the show...not the plot. You learn, you lewd and you love the characters and their personalities. Fans start clamoring for more. That's not a bad idea. I'd take a Danberu anime. WHEN IT'S READY.

I can help you out

when you realize you overtrain how about you take 2-3 rest days and then keep training but at decreased frequency and volume? cut a set or two from your heavy lifts and take 1 more rest day than usual. that way you keep progressing instead of completely falling out of the rhythm and you should recover not much slower than completely stopping (which as you see does not work too well). just don't go back to the rhythm that led you to overtrain, at least not without fully recovering first. try this and adjust depending on how it goes

You guys should be careful about exercises involving the foot. Like take care of your feet, seriously.

Even professional athletes with access to the best sports doctors end up retiring early due to foot injuries.

It took me 6 months to get my right foot and leg back to normal after straining my right foot by stomping too hard which required me to avoid leaning too much weight on my right foot and also daily rubs and massages since the muscles on my leg all had a tendency to feel sore and seized up.

The risk becomes greater the more heavier you are and I learned my lesson.

As for why I was stomping, it had to do with Paranoia.

At the peak of the Zika Fright Scare from the media, I discovered a Mosquito flying in front of me and instead of doing the smart thing which was open the car door and just leave, I decided to use my right feet to stomp that sucker dead and in less than a minute, I had already kicked and stomped the glove compartment 6 times and something that resembled mosquito paste was found on my shoe afterwards.

It didn't hit me until later, that I had fucked up my feet because only around 9PM that night, I started feeling pain in my right feet and it felt like everything was sore all over.

Luckily I didn't have anything like bruising but I must have injured some major nerve or muscle in my foot because for the next 6 months, my right foot and leg just didn't feel right unless I massaged them.

I even went and bought one of the most expensive foot massages on the market and the only one I believe that is FDA approved and certified.

I could not afford to go get Xrays or see foot doctors/sport doctors whatever so I had to make do with buying an expensive foot massager because rubbing the heel of your injured foot with just your hands isn't good enough to help soothe everything inside your heel just only the top of your heel and I needed a foot massager to really loosen everything up.

And yeah, used this bitching ass expensive foot massager for 6 months and my right foot fucking finally went back to feeling normal.

Are you just starting out? Training doesn't just make you stronger but also better at squeezing out that last bit of effort. If it's a big problem you can lower the weight and do longer sets for a bit to work on your endurance.
