I don't think it was anything to do with the content as much as the tone. They took a serious approach to the animal issues when usually it's comical and there was no reason to buy into the drama in a serious way when we just met those characters. I really liked that episode.
Mostly because it showed multiple things about the Friends.

The fact that the crowd willingly chose to gather at an event probably far-off from their original biomes for the sole purpose of entertainment. My favorite part though was despite being animals at heart, the penguins and the gay showed initiative to emulate human-like behavior. It was one of the few times aside from the owls as well as snek that Friends and those around them acknowledged the concept of occupation and service beyond utility.

It probably was just an idol episode for the sake of it but I liked the idea I had placed in my head when I watched it. Hey I'm a sucker for the world, what can I say?

Companies invest in things to make money and they make money by using anime to advertise product. The whole "contractually obligated" line is stupid though.
