It's cute and all but I find that the series lacks a bit of focus and progression. I want to see more of Akko actually progressing in magic and doing shit. I want to see the other witches more.

The series is 25 episodes. It isn't a single-cour. Trigger already said that the first half was hijinks and setting up story threads, the last half is gonna be where the plot kicks in. I'm guessing around ep 11+ is where we'll get our plot with Ursula and Akko.

We know the plot here. Akko is trying to be an awesome witch like her idol Chariot. Technically speaking, we've already seen her improve in magic even with all her fuckups. So by the time plot kicks in she will probably be semi-useful and have room to grow into something actually interesting.

We've also been fed a variety of implications for a larger, less character focused plot. There's clearly something going on with the position of magic in the modern world, with it being hammered in again and again that it's incredibly out of fashion. We just got some background that it was much more widely appreciated only two centuries ago, and within the lifespan of living witches. We've also gotten whatever Andrew's dad is up to work with.

This is all not to mention the weird images of other witches and foreshadowy images from the leyline.

I'm not arguing we've actually gotten a lot of plot, but if they're promising to get more into that later, we do already have a good bit of background set up to jump off of for it.

I love how each episode starts off as random trouble-making yet somehow fits all the pieces neatly together at the end; even if it's a repetitive formula, the comfy makes it balanced and often overlooked so by the end of the ride we land on a happy note. Definitely AOTS for me and possibly one of the best for years. I don't remember the last time an anime made me feel complete by the end of the episode.
