/a/ is too elitist to admit that's it's good because it would place them on the same level as the mainstream audiences who also enjoyed it.
for anyone who cares there are two easter eggs relating to garden of words
The teacher is the same character and the restaurant where Taki works is named the garden of words. It is written in Italian on a sign
>>
>>154257026
I read somewhere that the restaurant's name was snuck in by one of the background artists. That was nice of them.

I think the reason was attempting to persuade the audience that the two main characters wouldn't just magically hook up even though they did in such a short time. Didn't detract from the movie at all.
>>
>>154256359
>/a/ considers it pleb trash
I don't think that's true, I think a lot of anons preferred Shinkai with maximum suffering and zero closure.
>>

Technically there's two. Saya > Tessie > Mitsuha and Mitsuha > Senpai > Taki.

It was pretty good. I just watched it on a fifteen hour flight to shanghai.

The production was obviously amazing, though some of the animation felt a little weird. Like when they were doing the dance, it got into that "not exaggerated enough for anime" territory.

As far as a verging on melodramatic romcom with supernatural elements goes, it was definitely up there. For me the biggest problem was the pacing. The montages / fucking music video interludes were a huge disappointment. There's a point in the film where it just says "okay we're done building character now, let's skip to the next time something dramatic happens" and my gut reaction was to disagree entirely.

Anyway, in terms of story and character I enjoyed Anohana more. They're fundamentally very similar, but I feel like Your Name put for more emphasis on plot while Anohana on character. The obvious rebuttal to that is that Your Name is a movie and is more likely to succeed on plot, but I counter that the climax just went on a bit too long with all the twists and turns. You can't have a series of emotional climaxes lasting half a fucking hour. I mean the plot made sense and everything, but the emotional arc of the film just kind of plateaued for the last third.

It was a beautiful film with a rich world and pretty enjoyable characterization. The pacing was awkward, the plot was lumpy, and the best thing that anybody could logically say about it is that it's the best example of something we've seen a hundred times before (I don't personally think it is, but it would be a valid opinion to have).

To paraphrase a great man, Your Name aimed right at the middle of the road and hit the mark perfectly.

The movie was so shit it couldn't get an Oscar nomination.

Still, that shitty crap Ghbli put out last year get a ticket, Kimi no nawa didn't. It just proves how shit KnN is.

The Academy doesn't pay attention to animated films, especially if they're anime
>>
>>154264135
Which I literally address in my post. I mean you're right, but my point was that its runtime wasn't really well spent.
>>
>>154250112
I don't know if I should watch it this weekend.
On one hand critics are good and it seems like a fine story on the other hand I don't want to remember how alone I am
>>
>>154264371
it's also not similar to Anohana in any way really - you should address that too
>>
>>154250112
That goddamn ending, tho.

He should have remember her fucking name.
Him forgetting it at the end literally means the entire fucking is meaningless.

All those adventures and stuff they went thru together? It means jack shit now if no one remembers it.
>>
I tried watching it but turned it off about 30 minutes in since nothing was happening. Does it become an actual movie a bit later on?

EVERY SHINKAI MOVIE
>>
>>154264475
>high-school-age romance
>rural town setting lends significant character to the movie
>rom-com structure
>supernatural elements allowing dead love interest to communicate with living partner
>ascends to melodramatic climax
>themes of love transcending death
>not similar to Anohana in any way

At this point I can only assume that you're saying that they're dissimilar only because the leads don't end up together at the end of Anohana or something equally retarded.
>>
>>154264171
Kimi no Nawa isn't geared towards children or going the artsy route, of course it wouldn't get close to an Oscar.
>>
>>154264844
It's telling a different story and it's aesthetic is entirely different
>>
>>154266800
>It's telling a different story
Meaningless, all stories are different stories. I've already outlined the distinct similarities in the stories and the way they're told.

>it's aesthetic is entirely different
First, no it isn't, second, even if it were, that's superficial at best.

You need to either refute my arguments or make some of your own if you want to engage me on this. If you're not interested in doing so then why bother replying in the first place?
>>
>>154266956
I mean it's telling a story about very different things, overcoming regret, coming to terms with ones past, whatever
>>
>>154267624
You're saying they're thematically different. That's certainly true. I'll grant you that. I think there's some overlap in the themes, but to some extent they're exploring different ideas about the human condition. Granted.

But let's review your original statement:

>it's also not similar to Anohana in any way really

I was making the point that Anohana and Your Name have similarities, that in a way they can be placed into a shared abstract category. I cited their dramatic arcs, their subject matter, their characterization.

In response you've argued that they are thematically different. This is true. So in order for your original statement to be true, this new statement either needs to invalidate my original points, or override them entirely somehow. So let's look at those possibilities.

Does the two being thematically different somehow invalidate my points of similarity? I argue that no, it does not. Theme exists mostly in parallel to the dramatic arc, the subject matter, and characterization. In fact, the three pillars of a story are theme, plot, and characterization. While these things can be interrelated, none of them is a complete story on their own. Plot or character can be just as important as theme, and I'd argue certainly are in the case of this movie.

Do the thematic differences somehow make my points of similarity irrelevant? Again, I don't see how. If you took Your Name and changed it so that she was Japanese and he was Chinese but they still didn't find out until the end, you'd have a thematically different story, but it would still be very similar in every other way.

And at the end of the day, that's the important point. I never said the two were the same story, I just said they were similar, that I can group them into the same broad category of story, the same type of story.

Why didn't the Oscars or Academy Awards voters understand Kimi no Na wa?

Was it because the first 30 minutes anime episode style? Was the OP song out of nowhere? Was it the PTSD of previous romances? What happened?
