>A girl wasting her potential by pretending to study and getting mediocre grades on purpose because she values being seen as cute in high school more than her future makes you clever
Are these the views of the character or the views of Ohba himself? It's hard to tell sometimes.
>>
>>154196647
He's right, though. If a girl is cute, she can get a rich man and never have to work.

It's bullshit sociology ruining policies since forever.
http://quillette.com/2017/03/03/why-social-scientists-should-not-participate-in-the-march-for-science/

>Many have criticized social science research for being ideologically biased and, frankly, many of these criticisms are fair. For one, social scientists have spent decades using sloppy empirical methods, or no methods at all, to make the case that conservatives uniquely possess a number of undesirable personal characteristics (e.g., prejudice and intolerance). However, as I discussed in an article for Scientific American, recent studies reveal methodological flaws of past research and show that liberals are no more tolerant or nondiscriminatory than conservatives.
>
>Moreover, a number of the psychological concepts social scientists and activists have used to support social justice-oriented interventions and policies have not stood up well to empirical scrutiny. Take, for instance, the concept of stereotype threat. Psychologists proposed that female math performance is undermined by the existence and situational awareness of the stereotype that women are bad at math. However, the stereotype threat explanation of women’s math performance has failed multiple replication attempts. Meta-analyses have offered no support for the idea. And the original supporting research has been widely criticized as having many methodological and statistical problems. Still, many social scientists, activists, and college administrators continue to teach and champion the idea. […]

You can be cute and still be smart and get good grades though. Plus, there's no guarantee that a rich man will come along, it's best to work hard on your own and gain skills/knowledge in order to be safe, which is what an actual clever girl would do.
Would getting good grades actually repel men anyway?
>>
Why not just do what everyone does and say "wow I didn't study at all last night haha"
>>
She wants to be a seiyuu. Being cute is far more important to her than getting good grades. Did Takagai even say she got bad grades?

Right before the OP scene, Moritaka says that "She seems to study a lot, but her grades are just above average", to which Takagi responds that Miho is pretending to study for the reasons laid out above.
Takagi later compares her to Iwase, the girl with the highest grades in class, and he says that because the fact that she takes pride in her good grades means that she's actually dumb.
>>

This thread again?

The answer is the same every time. Anti-intellectualism is a thing. People all over the world, both male and female, dumb themselves down to fit in and not be ostracized.

Japanese boys doing great on school are appreciated by their peers because they may have a bright future. It's different for women because their future is making babies
>>
>>154198736
>>154198259
I'm pretty sure that Japanese girls are pressured by society and especially their parents to get good grades too.

>Would getting good grades actually repel men anyway?
Women having a mind of their own is a big turn-off for Japanese men. Also ambition is good for men but terrible for women, unless it's for some irrelevant shit like becoming an idol
>>
>>154198785
Women are still expected to quit their jobs after getting married so it's kinda useless, unless they become Christmas cakes and no one want to be a Christmas cake, see countless anime jokes about women over 25 lamenting not being married
>>
>>154196647
That character was written solely as a motivation for the MC, don't take her seriously.

In fact, it was entertaining to see Ohba trying clumsily to write her "romance" with the MC seriously.
>>
>>154198828
You can get good grades while still being a quiet submissive partner in a relationship.

Probably Ohba's views considering the context and his female characters. Not that actual women care because they're too buisy schlicking over the male characters

Who wrote this utter garbage? Does this guy really dislike women who feel empowered by their own strength?

Welcome to anime

>>implying good grades matter in the long run
In Japan they matter a lot

>>implying anyone even cares about high school grades
The university you want to apply to sure will

>>implying you need to be top of the class to have a good future
Ever heard of scholarships?
>>
>>154199153
There are anime with tons of girl-power so I don't know what you're talking about
>>
>>154199034
That line is especially weird since because we see that several female characters in this series do in fact have dreams. Including one (or two if you count Iwase) who also dreams of becoming a Mangaka.
>>
>>154199168
>>>In Japan they matter a lot
Read "in the long run". Once you have a job no one gives a shit what grades you got.

>>>The university you want to apply to sure will
Having above average grades and great social skills will get you into most universities.

>>>Ever heard of scholarships?
>implying you need a scholarship to have a good future
>>
Seems like the mangaka is tailoring this to the audience, the audience being schoolboys who hold similar views about females around them. The extent to which he believes what the character is saying is unknown, so you shouldn't take it as 100% his view. He did the same thing in Death Note with Light and he's not a Kira worshipper. The point is to catch the interest of the reader.
>>
>>154197774
But earlier in the chapter Takagi said that the reason he's studying hard and trying to get good grades even though he wants to be a mangaka is because he's not 100% sure he'll succeed at that so he wants to at least have other options. Shouldn't the same apply to Azuki? She should work hard in case the seiyu thing doesn't pan out.
>>
>>154198736
While animu exaggerates delinquents like it exaggerates everything else, you better believe nerds get bullied in Japan just like they get bullied everywhere else.

In a school setting, having someone around that makes everyone else feel intellectually inferior leads to lashing out against the person. Anyone who isn't an autist will tone it fucking down to avoid that.
>>
>>154199961
Yeah, should. What you think a character ought to do isn't relevant senpai. She's not doing it, she's doing something else and you think it's unwise. Even if it's true, she's doing it wrong for the sake of the story.
>>
>>154200861
>she's doing it wrong for the sake of the story.
Not really, her grades have no impact on the story, mostly because Azuki as a person has no impact on the story.
>>
>>154201055
I'm taking about not working hard as OP expects her to. I don't even get why this is a big deal, as if people don't do things like this in real life.
>>
>>154201154
>as if people don't do things like this in real life.
The problem is tha Takagi treats it like a good thing, he cites it as evidence that Azuki is clever.
>>
>>154201217
He means she is in touch with her femininity, cultivating an image tailored to the perception of others to achieve her goals. To him, this is a display of social intelligence. If she tries too hard, she could cultivate a different image that will potentially clash with her goals.

I'm not sure you're obligated to agree with everything he says. It's just a comic.
