Kiku threw the candle. There is no supernatural shit in rakugo. The red-eyed sukeroku and the god of performance are just manifestations of his desire to die alongside his rakugo and end the art itself.

The "normal" sukeroku is his desire to go on living to be around yotaro, konatsu and shin.

I thought this really showed how he aged.
It has far more emotion put into it than the Shinigami from S1 but the vocal execution isn't as good because he's straight up too old. For example, remember the long, drawn-out "Kietaaaaa" he did at the end? And here he just blurts it out collapses.

That's what it seemed like originally. But I suppose since Yakumo's performance doubled as an apology and a plea for forgiveness from Miyokichi, she's no longer that way with him. He lost his chance to really apologize for his coldness and because she'll always love Yakumo, she forgave him.
Now the next boss battle is facing Sukeroku head on and his last-minute realization that he doesn't want to die will bring him closer to that.

Everything would've been fine if Kiku wasn't such a turbo asshole and cut his ties with Miyo and Sukeroku for Rakugo.
