>My sides!
Is this an accurate translation of a girl finding something funny?

>of a girl finding something funny
You can't translate such a situation accurately to a single English sentence.
You mean "of what she said". That's a completely different thing.
If you are going to complain about language, mind your own.

>That's a completely different thing.
It's functional equivalence.
>>154158000
No, it isn't.
Accurately translating a girl finding something funny into English would require you to delve deeply into psychology (or biology, depending on your angle) or you abandon accuracy and all pretense of correctness and use similes or memes such as "my sides". That would be just a cop-out, technically, but it would kind of get the job done.
Meanwhile, accurately translating what she said would require adherence to her words, and possibly 3 to 10 TL notes.

>'my sides' gets the job done
>memes are easier than good translation
>TL note boogeyman
Hi herkz.
>>154158199
Did you miss the qualifiers "kind of" and "accurately"?
>>memes are easier than good translation
Would you honestly question that?
>>154158199
my sides is not a meme
>[Commie]
>accurate translation
What do you think?
>>154158508
>my sides is not a meme
In what world has anyone said "my sides" in a non meme context
>>154158605
this one
"My sides [hurt from laughing]" is very normal.
"My sides [are in orbit]" is a dumb meme.
>>154158508
Technically all language is a meme. It's just that no one even remembers what "meme" means.
>>154158686
Yes, but no one says just "my sides"
>>154158538
What's wrong with commie?
>>154159363
Communism does not work.
>>154159363
A bunch of meme lords. Although I do appreciate them not covering up tits with the subtitles.
How many times will you post this thread?
>>154158769
Yes they do. I've heard people say that even before 4chan existed, mostly in the context of "ow, my sides" after having a good laugh.
>>154160478
No you haven't
>>154160502
Yes, I have.
>>154160217
What's wrong with that?
>>154160502
Not him, but I've seen it in fiction predating the Internet.
>>154160812
I used "lol" in aural communication 15 years ago. That still doesn't mean it's a good idea to put it into subtitles.
I'm not sure what that implies for "my sides" though, because I'm a a dirty ESL and can't estimate what it sounds like to a native speaker. But personally I'm much more comfortable with "my sides" than with "lol".
>>154157784
Japanese literally has a phrase that means "my sides" both in the literal and figurative sense: 片腹痛い
If they're saying that, "my sides" is a perfectly valid translation.
>>154160797
epic, simply epic XD
>>154161289
Don't use emoticons on /a/.
>>154157784
How would we know?
>>154160948
"My sides" works fine in English.
"Splitting your sides" appeared in idioms dictionaries before 2002, at least.
>>154157784
It's fine here, because she's actually grabbing her sides. I've seen Commie use the same phrase in a really awkward/bad way though.
>>154161676
>>154157784
>commie
In France we say "putain mes côtes" like "oh shit my sides". No one complain about this.
