I catch up whenever a part finishes. It reads much, much better in one sitting, it's hard to keep the tension up when there's a couple weeks between each chapter.

I think part of the charm of Akagi and Kaiji is FKMT's art, I wouldn't have it any other way.

His art fits his stories, none of his works would be half as good with some generic "good" art, which is why I said he's a good mangaka. Although he isn't necessarily good at drawing, his drawings and writing go hand in hand which in turn makes the stories enjoyable. Fukumoto stories with your run of the mill, pretty manga art would just feel out of place and not nearly as enjoyable.
It's true that mangaka are also judged by their art, but their art doesn't have to be technically good as long as their style fits the story and doesn't hinder it, like in Fukumoto's case where the art suits his storytelling. The guy can draw exactly what his stories need, no reason to call him a bad mangaka.
