The characters weren't generic. They had the same depth the Gantz cast had at that point.

There was potential for fleshing out the Gantz universe more or even retconning some of the dumb stuff. It had the same gritty survival atmosphere and the MC was as gutsy as Kei. Shitty girl drama? Ah yeah, I remember how "Tae-chan!" x100 was much more compelling.
