Asuka is better from a critical point of view because she serves as an emotional foil to Shinji and both grow and change as the story progresses. Rei is an emotionless clone who for that reason doesn't have the same dynamic with Shinji as Asuka does and is essentially a plot device in the guise of a character. Asuka is objectively a better character.

Many of the characters serve a role as foil Shinji. He's compared and contrasted with Asuka, Rei, Misato, Gendo, even his friends. It's a given when he really is the center of the story.

Your attempt to elevate Asuka is self-defeating because you're not even saying she's good by any of her own merits, but only in relation to another character. You're saying Asuka is not even her own character, she's only who she is by her 'dynamic' with Shinji. But every character has a 'dynamic' with Shinji, so what is Asuka? Ironically the thing she hates most according to your post: dependent. Dependent on something to mean anything or she's nothing at all.

In short, stop being a shippershit, you denigrate the character you claim to like.
