The problem is that Kubo's writing has the willpower of a clump of plankton, and she got derailed by Baldfat (because it was easier to write) and by her desire to make the audience clearly side with Yuuri over Yurio, to the point that in the final product, the friendship/rivalry between them lost most of its intended meaning

Nah, that would work in a 2 cour show. If Baldfat got pared down more it'd feel thin, they needed every interaction they could get to feel a more natural feeling and progression to their relationship. Even now it feels quite fast.

Writers need to know when to take thing out and change dynamics when something isn't working or became superfluous. The FatFairy rivalry stagnated by her own admission, she should have changed his final monologue to fit what the story became.

On a more subjective level I'm not mourning the loss of yet another rivalry thing in a sports anime, I'm more interested in Fairy's problems with Bald and Baldfat after the onsen on ice, anyway,.

That screentime should be taken from other things, or they should have reworked his scenes. He ended up more distanced from the main story, so if it comes down to a choice, Baldfat takes priority.

The problem is some aspects involving Fairy do seem to be from a different draft, Baldfat for all its flaws and ep 12 is the main narrative and is pretty tight.
