these cliches often show up in other places (because they aren't exclusive to mecha anime) and audiences are at least somewhat familiar with them

audiences with a vague simplistic view of mecha are more likely to view eva as subversive and interesting, because to them, mecha is basically transformers in terms of complexity and intelligence

the entire premise is a bit off, being united against one big bad works, it does not persist after the big bad is dead. It's in fact the perfect opportunity for everyone to rip eachother apart again.

I watch the Dragon Ball series, but there's a small amount of people in the fanbase that care to acknowledge the flaws in the show.

As a jojofag as well, people do put in it in a pedestal when it isn't all that great. I hate the fact that normies are now exposed to it, but sorta happy that it's getting exposure
