Zenkichi had a normal childhood other than his dad walking out, but it's not like it was super sad for him or anything. But I guess the whole point of Zenkichi's character was to be the normal guy surrounded by freaks.

Goku's life was pretty shitty but he was too dumb and innocent to realize it, so it evens out.

He shrugs off the extinction of his entire race because it doesn't really matter to him. When he learns he killed his own Grandfather he's a bit shocked and decides to apologize to him next time he sees him in the afterlife, but that's the extent of it.
