Initial D has got to be one of the only adaptations I know where the anime is objectively better than the manga. Even disregarding the obvious positive influence that Eurobeat brings, the anime manages to fix a lot of the terrible design decisions that Shigeno wrote. If you thought 5th/Final was badly rushed in the anime, coming from someone who read those parts in the Manga, they did it a favor. I also liked some of the small tweaks like putting the Sileighty fight before Ryosuke. Also, a lot of the weird design choices in the anime can be attributed directly to faithfulness to the manga. Ever wonder why Ryosuke looks like an entirely different person in 5th stage? Its because that's what happens to Shigenos artstyle, and the anime had to adapt to that after 6 years of hiatus. I read all of the manga and I regret wasting my time: it's obvious he didn't give a shit anymore by the last third and I kinda wish the anime directors stepped in some more, despite that being something I would never say about any other series.
