Yes. The ordeal about the transgender/transspecies shit at the end was the final nail in the coffin, in two senses. It was that which defeated any hope of Nihei returning to what he once was, and it was also given at the very end of the manga - thereby, it *had* to be the last nail in the coffin. Idiots hold up the anger produced over that single development as a sign that "lol shipperfags hate nihei now", or "xd ur just mad about the ending", or what have you. In truth, it is only one of the points of Sidonia which produced such violent emotional reactions.

I can understand if people are mad that he's not using the old style, but I really don't see how this is a shit tier artstyle in a vacuum, honestly. It looks pretty decent, I really like the lines. Only big issue I have is the lack of definition/texture on snow and snow-covered areas. I'm pretty sure if this was published by someone other than Nihei, art opinion would be neutral to positive, but because it's him it gets the "Wow, this is completely worthless, how horrible!" treatment.

Blame! is my favourite Nihei work, but why would anyone want him to make something like that again? I'm pretty satisfied with him making different things, I know there's not much else like Blame!, but it's kind of sad to feel like someone's worth as an artist lies in them repeating the same kind of story over and over until they die. I think that all of his serialised works have pretty much done something fairly different from the others, so I hope this is something new as well.

I'm not sure what to expect to from this series, but if it's something designed to have more mass appeal in the same way that Sidonia was, then hopefully it will be something more polished that learns from some of the shortcomings Sidonia had. I thought Sidonia's ending was meh, but not horrible. The girl on the cover looks really cute, which is nice to see because I'm not an edgelord. It's pretty interesting to look at how Nihei's art has gradually gotten cuter since the start of his career, though. I do miss his ability to use solid blacks, but I guess the current art style works well enough, so I'll see where it goes.

I feel like you're too hung up on old Nihei. If you preferred his old style, of course you're going to be disappointed, but if you come in as a new reader, you won't mind it much. I sure didn't, as someone who got into Nihei's works after reading Sidonia.

I feel like his most recent works are more like him having some laidback fun doing whatever he wants than him trying to establish himself and putting all of his dark fantasies into play. His works changed with him, his old fans will go away, and he will also get new readers to make up for it.

At least he's being bold and trying out things outside of what he made popular.

The oneshot for this wasn't in Afternoon, though. It was in fucking Young Magazine, it just switched to Sirius for the serialization. So he had it test-run in one hugely popular seinen magazine, and he had previous connections to multiple other fairly-popular seinen magazines, and it somehow wound up in a minor shounen magazine instead. Clearly it was not seen as having big mainstream potential, and yet he went ahead anyway. This just really doesn't fit the big sellout-who-only-cares-about-money narrative you're trying to push here.
