See, this is the problem.
The show was fantastic overall but the finale, despite having a great connection with all of its themes and tying up every plot thread and delivering a satisfying experience came short of being the amazing sort of thing people expected, it didn't blow our minds.
That's because he was too sane and emotionally functional.

Oshiyama needed more suffering and angst and delusions to properly tap into them.

I blame the low sales on his parents who didn't do a good job properly traumatizing him so he could grow up to become a renown director for a 50K+ selling anime masterpiece.
