Floor dwelling actually looks pretty comfy. But even as a cleanfreak who sweeps his floors twice a day and hoovers every second day I wouldn't really want to sit in all the dust, hair and shit that gets blown in from outside. You'd really have to be on top of cleaning to not be dirty whilst doing Jap style floordwelling.

Not having to tuck in your sheets and blanket, or having them slip off of you would be nice though.

Parts of it is culture and the other part is lack of space. You can put away a futon, can't do the same with a bed. It's also more work since you have to air it out periodically and put it away every time you are finished with it.

On the other hand, tatami mats is just retarded.

It's better for your back than a regular mattress.

I made the change a month ago to a 100% cotton futon on a natural straw tatami mat and I sleep considerable better at night than i did on my 800e mattress.

If you ever lived in Tokyo and paid 65-70k for a 1K, you would know how much space you have for a bed. Obviously, not everyone lives in Tokyo and some people can afford at least 1LDK or 1DK but even then you still save space with futons.

I sleep on the floor on one if these. Fold it up every morning and suddenly my room has significantly more space. If it ever gets dirty or used up I'll just buy another. My back has felt awesome for the 2 years I've used it.

There's a bunch of stuff you can't do on them. They get ruined if you spill just about anything on it (easier to replace than carpet though). Also what you said about moisture. If you have a tatami mats, you will have problems with a bed.

No, it's not. True like 30% is mountains and the areas just outside of Tokyo is government-funded farmlands, but there is plenty of actual room. They didn't have to cram 1/3 of the population into one city.

Hell just living in Osaka or Sapporo gives you plenty of space by comparison.

Tokyo becoming a major population center is a rather recent thing. Kyoto was the capital of Japan until 1868, nowadays Kyoto only has a population of just under 2m

For the population density thing, you have to keep in mind that this was never the intended model. Up until about 60 years ago, we would usually have some disease come along and wipe out huge swaths of the population, numbers didn't really get big until recently in human history.

I mean Rome was considered unsustainably huge because it had a population of 1 million.

Sleeping on a futon is actually pretty comfy when you get used to it and I personally believe it's better for your back then an expensive ultra thick mattress. But modern science isn't really advanced enough to make a clear statement on this (true story).

However, what I really don't get is how them japs like to play vidya on the floor. Not to mention gaming on a non ergonomic laptop which gets probably hotter then the sun. Is this really happening or is pic related just a meme?
