To a certain extent, it is.
Konosuba had animation that was sub-par for the industry from season 1, but they somehow manage to make this low-grade shit look good. KonoSuba also has a very interesting story that makes every episode enteraining (nothing will ever top s2e4 though).

KyoAni on the other hand can best be described as a studio that has "style over substance" as their motto. They often animate great things, but their writing/adaptations are only by high exception interesting or entertaining. They mostly rely on cute pandering/moeshit (which is style, not substance). If it wasn't for Kanna-chan being so sickeningnly adorable, I wouldn't even care much for Maid Dragon, and last year's big KyoAni animation (Phantom World) was boring as all hell.

Shochiku has been playing KyoAni like fiddle ever since K-on movie. This time they reduced screenings for KnK after the 3rd week even though it had good momentum at the time and distributed the film in shitty venues in favor of other Shochiku movies, there was lots of complaining on Twitter Japan about tickets being sold out and people not finding the movie in centric theaters. The fact that KyoAni is still with them after how little faith they have in the studio is telling enough. KyoAni has no power over Shochiku and I don't see other, better distributors lining up to work with them. Shochiku did underestimate the popularity of KnK, but that's not completely unreasonable given the serious subject matter. But it still ended up being one of Shochiku's most successful films last year if I'm not mistaken. If it wasn't for Kanna-chan being so sickeningnly adorable, I wouldn't even care much for Maid Dragon, and last year's big KyoAni animation (Phantom World) was boring as all hell.

I have to somewhat agree, somewhat disagree. Their insistence for a while in only animating stuff they could keep control over limited them far too much; they've never been good with original works and the adaptations they could get complete control over weren't that good in the original. (Though it's hard to blame them for wanting that, given they got blamed for Endless Eight when it wasn't their idea to do Disappearance as a movie instead of the seven episodes of the TV series as they'd planned, and they had to quickly throw together a new plan.)

But when they can adapt something that's good, and they bring their A game to it - they're brilliant. It's an unfortunate fact that they haven't been able to do that much of late, but it's not entirely fair to call them "style over substance".
