Has the deteriorated animation quality of anime been addressed to the creators of anime? /a/?

im not that much into anime, but i know enough to know that anime thats being created in the past 10 years isnt as close to as good as the average old anime from the 80's and 90s

if the gaming industry worsened graphics the industry would be in an uproar so what is happening with anime? most of it is like 2 frames per second these days? update me what the fuck is happening

inb4 story is more important in anime, granted but same can be said to other forms of entertainment, story driven games still have up 2 day graphics, same with CGI film

the fuck is happening with anime

no im not trolling
when you watch AKIRA and look at the city, it is moving, different frames

when you look at kimi no na wa the city is obviously just a cut in past back ground and looks plain dead

theres no interacting between the characters on screen and the city scape

which is cheap animation i am refering to,

the characters dont even fit into the environment like in akira,

basically texture less character design with no shade or depth

Weekly series, OVAs, TV specials, movies, they all have varying budgets and time constraints, thus affecting the animation, polish, corrections, and design.

Akira looks great but I think it focused on that too much. Like great effort was put into making these cool looking scenes happen one after another but the story is kinda strange as a result.

THE STORY IS THE ENTIRE POINT IN WHY AKIRA IS LEGENDARY, BUT THERE WAS A TIME WHERE STORY AND IMAGE QUALITY HAD A STANDARD, I SERIOUSLY KNOW BECAUSE I REMEMBER THOSE TIMES

I REMEMBER NOT TOLERATING ANIME WITH POOR ANIMATION

THIS WAS WHEN VHS AND DVDS WERE COLLECTED, AND PEOPLE LITERALLY WOULDNT BOTHER WITH BAD ANIME

EVERYTHING WAS SPREAD WORD OF MOUTH, A FRIEND OF MINE TOLD ME ABOUT WHICH ANIMES WERE GOOD ID WATCH AND ID SAY YEA IT WAS GOOD OR YEA IT WAS BAD

THE COVER MENT EVERYTHING, WE ACTUALLY JUDGED THE BOOK BY ITS COVER AND THUS THATS HOW WE DISCOVERED ANIMES

NOT THIS "GIVE IT A CHANCE BRO JUST LOOK PAST THE ART STYLE"

Gif not related, I guess? Anyway, yeah, Akira did some cool stuff with its animation, it's overall a very polished product, no one's denying that. But it certainly isn't representative of the 80s and 90s as a whole. Some high budget, polished films came out in those decades. But high budget, ambitious films come out in EVERY decade. Look at almost any Ghibli film since the studio was founded in 1985 for consistent examples.

The thing you're failing to take into account is that theatrical films make up the least proportion of anime out there. In terms of how many are produced each year, ever since the early 80s, it's gone: TV series > OVA sets > theatrical films. Which as >>153766740 mentions, all have varying production values, with TV having the lowest, and films having the highest.

Although I don't believe this is true, let's consider a hypothetical example wherein Akira is THE GREATEST piece of animated media ever made. Even if that were true, the worth of the 80s and 90s overall would still be dragged down by the enormous amount of shitty looking TV anime made back then. This is the regular animation quality of the most popular, mass-produced shows back then: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XOPuVkQ3uc There's no difference between then and now: the few high budget films released in a year will look great, the huge amounts of low budget TV shows will look mediocre.

If there's any argument to be made here, it's that TV shows now look better than ever before, due to the effects of digital animation techniques being developed and investors being willing to put more money into TV shows, but that's a topic for a different thread.

Well you see in the year 2007 the group known only as "Kyoto Animation" (also called KyoAni) assassinated everyone who worked in the animation industry at the time and invented what would become known as "moeshit" thus killing anime forever.

I partially agree with your statement but come on... you can't say that and post GITS. GITS is by all definitions far above average.

While anime quality certainly have dropped it is also true that 10 years ago, okay, make it 20 years ago a western viewer would not get the whole spectrum. You would get (some) of the hits, the real popular ones and that's it.

Later on the industry would sell canned combos. You get 2 popular ones 8 crappy ones and so on. Now you can watch whatever so quantity has grown but quality has not.

You still get like 1 or 2 decent looking anime each year and every few years some of those that look good also come packing a memorable plot and characters.

Anime had a better aesthetic back then with handpainted backgrounds, shooting on film and the color palette of cel animation.

The actual animation quality is better now, in general.
>>
>>153770137
It has to do more with the studio than age then with the time, for example Bones anime is always going to have consistent fluid animation while DEEN will always have a shitty inferior animation and that will probably never change.
>>

>>
>>153765717

>>

>>
>>153770137
Animation's always going to be dodgy on a weekly series but yeah, the switch to computers/digital had a large effect in the kind of feeling of soullessness.

In other words, it's yet another reason I hate Blood: The Last Vampire for helping to pioneer/normalize all of that. It would've happened eventually anyway but it was the first so fuck you I.G.
>>
>>153765717

>Gaming industry

2/10 for making me reply.
>>
>>153775709
Blood: TLV is I.G.'s first full digitally coloured production but various studios in the 90s were already experimenting with CGI and digital colour and composite so it's silly to blame a single studio. Cowboy Bebop for instance had episodes and scenes with digital elements. Anyway, it's not like digtial automatically means a "soulless" or sterile look. Sure, the convenience of digital provides a lower barrier to entry but it also allows to break new ground in production methods in terms of efficiency and creative expression. Without digital composite, we won't get Shinya Ohira's multi-layered animation or Kou Yoshinari's beautiful digital 2D fire effects.
>>
Talk about 2D digital
The Vision of Escaflowne TV version cost $300,000 usd per chapter in mid 90' still win my heart

>>
>>153775462
Nice over-generalizations, nerd.
>>
>>153776907
Not him but anime is still technically hand-drawn. They scan the drawings, put them into computers, and then color over them.
>>
>>153770137
So, why is it so hard to emulate the aesthetic in digital?

Is it so impossible, or has the industry as a whole chosen not to try?
>>
>>153776669
I never noticed the cat is there.
>>
>>153777158
It's possible to emulate it, King Gainer and G-Reco did it to an extent. I'm sure there's other shows too, it just takes more effort.
>>
>>153777299
But stuff like the three tone shading and the lighting effects don't seem to be anywhere near how they once were.
>>
>>153777158
Hand-painted backgrounds still exist though many productions prefer fully digital ones as it's faster which suits the rushed nature of anime production. Film grain is merely a byproduct of analog filming so it has to be a deliberate aesthetic choice for it to appear these days. Other things like designs and shading style are merely trends of the past and have largely fallen out of vogue.
>>
>>153777340
Shading in old TV anime was fucking shit, which is to say half the time it didn't even exist at all.
>>
>>153777340
You still find three-tone shading in some mecha anime with veteran animators. Having said that, complex shading in old anime isn't as common as you think it is. Lighting techniques are different due to changes in filming trends and the flexibility of digital post-processing.
>>
It's because they stopped doing cel animation
>>
>>153776907
>Those could be 2d layouts or reference drawings for the CG.
Except they're not. You can see that exact drawing in the anime. Don't be stupid.
>>

>>
>>153765717
Fucking kill yourself. Anime has always been an industry which basically exploits his workforce to exist. And that is true since the Tezuka days. That combined with animation techniques that required less drawings (and by that I mean less, a lot less than 2 frames per second, fucking ignorant retard) allowed anime to be bought overseas and to spread thanks to how cheap it was. And there you go, making a thread about the worsening quality of anime, with fucking Ghost in the Shell in the OP. Congrats, you made me mad.

Did you just not notice the plague of pixelly "indie" games that's taken over PC and Xbone/PS4?

The older consoles were insulated from it because developers of shitty games couldn't get their harvest moon clone running in 512MB and a triple-core 3.2GHz processor, but now the floodgates are open and all the shit from Steam is everywhere.

Why bother with artful, hand drawn, cel-animated animes that's frameworthy in stills when only like 2% of the PAYING audience gives a flying fuck. The things they look for quality in are figs and daki. When it comes to things like BG art and hand drawn animation, otaku don't care, just give them cute character designs and decent writing for their waifu, followed up by figs that make them feel like 2d is finally real and a few hundred gatcha mobage time wasters.
