I think it was also mostly a problem about life stressing him out, the annoying shit heads pretending they're hot shit and to not cause trouble he has to act like a chill and easy going dude to get them to leave, the chief who gives him flak for going out of his way to avoid trouble because he's too jaded to try it anymore and just wants the easy way out, and on top of all that stress the girlfriend wanting to marry him, have him meet his family and so on.

It wasn't really her fault in this case, since she was also holding back in order to not trouble him, but then they start the self destruct sequence where they start lying to each other about their troubles and putting on a fake smile to not hurt the other person.

Honestly, most of these problems can stop if sit down and talk, but most people are afraid of hurting the other person to try or find it troublesome.
