Oshii is a hack. I liked GiTS '95 better when it was called Jin-Roh. And don't get me started on the chop job he did with PL2.

There's your (You), now here's the truth. GiTS '95 was a breathtaking work of art that explored its themes in a way that was almost transcendent. It had a huge part in defining an aesthetic of cyberpunk and nothing has quite looked like it before or since. In many ways Oshii is a genius director.

Also, it had basically no story and the characters are all incredibly lifeless and boring. They're cyborgs, I know, but this just means GiTS is all wow-factor. Anybody who isn't bored the second time they watch GiTS '95 is a mongoloid who doesn't understand the first thing about storytelling.

SAC tells a far, FAR better story with tons of strong characterization. It's not the bold artistic statement that GiTS '95 was, and frankly it's not as important. But it's much more enjoyable.

And yes, I'm the guy who posts this in every one of these threads because we have one of these every damn day. I know I should just stop.

Read the manga.

SAC is kinda dumbed down compared to the movies, but that's to be expected from tv productions. I mean, compare how almost nothing happens in the movie in terms of plot but it's way more memorable than two hours worth of SAC episodes. Innocence especially is too much for /a/ because at no point does any character deliver a jarring monologue explaining the point of the story to the audience. In SAC the characters can't stop talking, the show has more unnecessary dialogue than the movies even though only the latter get criticised for it.

Arise worth watching?

The overarching plot was maybe a little less good but the standalone episodes are better and the art-style manages to stay on model a lot more of the time. Also Gohda's a pretty cool villain even if his plan is sorta dumb.

Basically the best way to do a new GitS is to make it a straight-up buddy cop action comedy where the paradoxical and puzzling aspects of consciousness, identity, society and technology are explored through situational humor and wacky characterization. It would illustrate those issues in a much more straight-forward, tangible and elegant way than by having the characters discuss them for 10 min at a time.

At least that's what I've deduced from comparing the various iterations of GitS so far.
