I think the reason for that is because Vic himself is quite religious. I don't think he was doing it intentionally, but when I attended one of his panels at a con two years ago, I did notice that he spoke of Jesus and faith more than I expected. I'm an atheist myself so whenever he spoke along those lines it stuck out to me. I don't have an issue with it or anything, he can believe what he wants, but it was quite clear to me that he's quite religious. It just came out naturally in the way he spoke.
So I think he said that about Ed because his job is to become the character, but he also wants the character to become like him. Kinda silly, but that's how I rationalize it. Not sure if I worded that exactly the way it sounds in my head, but w/e.

4kids honestly only really started getting bad once they got too big for their britches and started trying to dub literally everything that could be marketed to kids. Trying to do more straightforward shonen shit like Shaman King or One Piece meant they couldn't just rely on the VAs hamming it up, and the censorship hurt the end product a lot more.

YGO was kind of a perfect match for them because at its heart the show is dumb and overdramatic, so you can let the actors go wild. I remember I caught a rerun of one of the Duelist Kingdom episodes a while back and legitimately laughed out loud at some of Pegasus' deliveries.

I'm not at all a dub guy but I have serious respect for the DBZ English cast. The original Funi dub is nostalgic, but it has the typical failings of dubs of its era, if a little less pronounced. It was still those performances that helped DBZ make such an impact worldwide though, and over the years the cast became so in tune with the roles that they aced everything by the time Kai rolled around.

Nope, this is my opinion, and i really love dubs. That being said, these three shows work better in sub.
GTO becuase the raspy yakuza voice works better than smooth and badass steve blum.

Now I'm talking Schemmel's performance in Kai and up. Not only is he experienced with the role, he is given better dialogue and isn't being hindered by the over americanization of the source material. His screams have also gotten the rasp to them over the years, and it makes his power ups and attacks feel more powerful.

On a side note, I've always loved John Burgmeier's Tenshinhan
