What have you been watching/reading recently? What do you think of it?

What are you planning on watching/reading next?
>>
Just watched Nausicaa. I absolutely loved it. The way the world was built, the fun and exciting animation with good sound design backing it up; it all culminated into one very, very enjoyable movie. I have been trying to catch up on the classics a little more and it's definitely been worth it.
>>
I haven't watched anything today or yesterday, but I finished Nausicaa a few days ago. It was pretty good, the world was really interesting, I loved the flight. And the main character had a really nice design.

Besides that, watching an episode of Turn A Gundam now and then, at a rate that will take me months to finish.
Maybe a bit too recent, but also working on Oh! Super Milk-chan, did episode 8 today. For the most part, it's slightly boring, but most episodes make me laugh at some point. And it's best if you just space out, listening to Milk-chan's voice while watching her drooling while drooling. But episode 7, that one was great. I laughed so hard when they switched between the mole and them eating potato crisps. Every time the camera zoomed in on them in that blurry way while they ate and we heard that sound, it laughed so hard.

Also working on some others, but these are the ones I feel like talking about now.

Been watching Space Cobra. First episode was absolutely fantastic and instantly hooked me. The Royal sister arc got a bit weak (and lasted a long time considering it's an episodic show), but I'm enjoying it more again at episode 14

Haven't started reading it yet, but I've got the first volume of The Legend of Mother Sarah that I'm looking forward to reading soon. It seems pretty interesting, but I am a sucker for post apocalyptic settings

what's the best way to find slightly more obscure (still subtitled) older anime other than just lurking threads like this?

I may just be retarded, but the anidb search isn't too great and it repeats the same show a dozen times. I'd rather just go back in time using their chart search which to be fair isn't a bad way to do it

myanimelist doesn't have the control that anidb does, and is overall just a little more annoying to use

I use my country's anime database website for that.
>>
>>153723363

1.
Go to MAL
Seasonal anime -> archive
Pick a year and try things that look interesting

2.
Go to anidb
Find a director/seiyuu/writer/artist/etc from a show you enjoy
Try watching various things they've worked on

Also, learn enough japanese to watch untranslated anime, it's not very hard and you will miss out on a lot otherwise. And western rec charts generally suck, and are propped up by nostalgia for dubs of mediocre shows and hollywood mentality.
>>
>>153724176
I might consider making a chart that just includes all completely subbed older shows. would be useful for these threads

speaking of which, this thread doesn't seem like it'll have as long of a life as the last one. should we only bother making these on the weekends, or what? a weekly thread every saturday wouldn't be all that bad.
>>

>I Dream of Mimi, known as Buttobi!! CPU (ぶっとび!!CPU?) in Japan, 1999

>A young student named Akira has saved up a large sum of money to buy the latest and best personal computer - only to find out they are sold out. He then finds what he thinks is the same model number in an alley, and buys the large boxed-up machine from a shady character nearby. When he gets home, Akira is shocked to find that his new computer is a bio-android shaped like a pretty young lady. He is even more shocked when she tells him that she constantly needs his semen to refresh her physical memory.

Stretching things out is a problem I'm actually glad to see the last of. So many older shows are 50+ episodes and just have a bunch of episodes where nothing happens. I would much prefer 2 cours of a tightly focused narrative.

of cours enowdays you still get 1 cour shows that are a mess storywise and still manage to pack in several episodes of pointless shit but that's more a budgeting issue+studios just wanting to shit out as many new shows as possible.

Because they know perfectly well the answer to that question and are just asking it to bait people into starting a shitstorm.

The goal is to get people to start flinging accusations of nostalgia goggles and moeshit goggles at each other.

You know it's working when the same few fallacies are being thrown around, such as:
>moe existed in the 80s so it was just as bad as it is now!
and
>the artstyle doesn't matter, all that matters is the production values!
etc...

I honestly and genuinely mean this. I think Lain was 2deep4u.
As I remember Lain she was an AI created by a scientist who hoped to become God through the use of Lain to merge human consciousness. She naturally brings out humanty's subconscious and causes it to manifest. Her family was created to fulfill the role of integrating and helping her understand human society so that she could complete the dreams of that scientist. The episodes help explore elements of humanity as things unravel around Lain. It ultimately ends with her rejecting her founder and recreating the world without her presence since the sort of human connection and the type of being she is naturally causes disarray and dysfunction

Why was anime so awful before the 80s?

Anything before the 70s was Disney lookalike trash, and the 70s had nothing but kids mecha/racing/baseball shows with the depth of a puddle. I can only think of 4 worthwhile series from the 70s, and 2 of them are from the same universe.
>>
>>153738463
I noticed that as well as I was looking at each season's offerings starting in 70. starts off with nothing but sports shows, then lupin, then sports and mechs, then yamato, more mechs, then more lupin, and finally harlock and gundam

there was also obviously all the tatsunoko stuff
>>
I'm currently watching:

-Rose Of Versailles: great melodrama and direction, a must see.

-Kyou Kara Ore Wa!!: fun 10 episode furyo ovas, it's basically the same thing as shonan junai gumi so if you're disappointed over the lack of a true SJG anime then you definitively want to watch this

-Yu Yu Hakusho: It's a fun retro shonen but I think it lacks in comparison with how great Hunter x Hunter is, I know everyone won't agree with me, I've been told the serie peaks at the chapter black arc so I'm just waiting to get to this part

And I've recently watching Royal Space Force for the first time with a bunch of friends and we all really liked it, I'd love seeing Gainax try to experiment with this kind of realistic storytelling again

Well really it's because standards have changed. Production costs keep getting cut, art styles change to be easier to draw and animate, and most of all the tools and methods used to make anime series are different compared to back then even if the production cycle hasn't.
>>
>>153738981
and the sad thing is that it's impacting manga as well since the new generations of mangaka are imitating recent anime styles and not the other way around.
>>
>>153739019
Well can you blame them when the market has shifted away from print for the past decade or so? It's getting harder for the upstarts to hook people in with manga these days, just like the western comic book industry has been doing for the past 20 years. That's why DC and Marvel have dabbled in the movie shit all this time, if they just stuck with print then there IPs would fall into the void.

Trying to get through Oniisama E. Reading Sangokushi. It's an epic on the scale that I've expected from a Romance of the Three Kingdoms adaptation. As far as major factions go, I think Wu had the best run, considering their stable power foundation and the Sun family being fair rulers. As for Liu Bei, despite him being portrayed as the real main character of the story, and him being a moral and benevolent person, he lacks the resolve to sacrifice things for the greater good. Even with the respect and love from the people, other leaders are those they serve under, and it feels as if he never lost the naivety he had in his volunteer brigade days. Cao Cao on the other hand is a very instrumental leader, and I'd argue if his primary motivation was pure ambition to rise in power for the sake of power, more capable of seeing the big picture. Even as an antagonist of sorts, we never see him randomly pillage or kill innocent bystanders the way Dong Zhuo did, and the story never mentions his bureaucracy being corrupt. So other than usurping the throne, he was a "tyrant" as much as any lord in those times.

Also, the Zhuge Liang hype was real, other than Guan Yu, hardly any individual character got that much attention.

It's a cheesy romcom, but it was more tolerable than MI. You could easily attribute most of the misunderstandings to the main character lacking spine, which he grew in the end, because of growing up and all. Meanwhile in MI, the whole universe is cucking the MC, who is basically an adult, with his competition being a dead guy and a shameless playboy. There was way too much of poorly crafted drama for something that was supposed to be the same type of romantic comedy.

It was the same problem I had with Yawara, but at least that show had a likeable supporting cast. I'd never power through the show if it weren't for characters like Fujiko and Hanazono.

I read the 3 chapters that some random group put out, and it seemed pretty decent. a bit tough to tell some people apart and to keep track of what was going on in a few spots, but it definitely is making me consider picking up at least the first volume or two.

it's weird how different the tone is from the show, but to be fair I haven't watched the first series yet.

>>
>>153718926

>>
>>153764663
No, you still don't understand. It's not blended together, it's alternated in segments. 80% of the manga is comedy, the rest is romantic drama, for example the last volume is ONLY drama.

Basically the only reason for the manga to last that long was the slice of life comedy, with an established, frozen situation. This is a commercial manga, not an art house one. It HAS to last the longest possible. For what it is I'd say it's a very good one. Of course if you read it expecting an immediate, realistic resolution you're in for a big disappointment.

The original Dragon Ball series wasn't aired in the US in full until 2001. There were an obscure Harmony Gold dub of five episodes in the 80s as well as the 13-episode Ocean dub in 1995. But most burgers started with DBZ's 1996 Funi dub.

Germany on the other hand got the entirety of Dragon Ball in 1999 and DBZ in 2001.

Nostalgia probably plays a big part for me. We used to have a late-night anime block in the early 2000s, and Silent Möbius was my second-most favorite show that aired in it (first being Evangelion). I guess I'm also a sucker for his art style, since I can't say that there's much of a unifying theme between works such as Silent Möbius, Nadesico, Compiler (which I only discovered last year) or stuff like Dark Angel and that Batman thing. Finally, there's the terrible publishing history that keeps me occupied with Silent Möbius specifically.

All that doesn't explain why corporations all over the world prefer to hire Italian professionals because of their wider culture, rather than Americans.

Good lord, I know Italians have a misplaced sense of pride, but this is fucking ridiculous. Anyone I've talked to who had to work in Italy can't shut up about how lazy and inefficient you all are. Apparently your average work day is 45 minutes over work followed be an hour of coffee, and then repeat.

No, companies do not prefer hiring Italians, they prefer hiring people with educations and experience at top American universities and companies.

That's true only for the public. Do you really believe private firms accept that? You really are stupid, after all. It's like believing every single American is obese.

>most popular releases for both series are bloated as fuck
>episodes being 2 or even 3 gbs in size
Except that's not the case? Kagura's Urusei Yatsura encode has average episode size around 1.33 GB. It's "1080p" (minus cropped borders) partialy denoised video. I personally think the FLAC isn't really needed in videos so I would say he could have cut the file size there. But overall it is ok release.

You have to consider the video source you are encoding. Urusei Yatsura is an old show that wasn't even filmed on the best film material. The video is shaky and grainy with not a single frame being the same as the previous one.

You can compress new anime much better because static scenes are actually static. There is no natural grain or shaking. It just is much more compression friendly.

Kagura's video is partialy denoised because otherwise the video would be bit-starved at the already kinda big size. Noise/grain is more or less not compressable. That's why Iznjie Biznjie's release is even bigger, because it is trying to preserve the grain too. (And it isn't bloated either, it just really needs more bits to encode that grain.)

Kagura's release is not perfect, but it is ok. What you probably want is more economic release. Like 720p video with lossy audio release that is even more denoised.

It's always trade off between quality and size. "Bloated" release would be big for no reason. These are not.

It's mathematically equivalent to the original source signal and compressed. Every lossless codec is the same in this capability. They only differ in their compression efficiency.

It's got an obvious application in archival. Having the "one true" version of something. Besides that, it's excellent as source material for editing. You can re-encode or transcode as many times as you want between lossless formats with zero loss in quality. Try saving JPEG pictures lots of times. The shit adds up.

If you care at all about making quality releases, then you use an original BD image or a losslessly-encoded file. You don't re-encode other people's shit encodings in MP3 with shit parameters to save size.

Funny, that's exactly how i feel about the anime of today. And it is even worse, since it is all a buf commercial now. They are so damn afraid of taking risks that they dont even make 20+ episode shows anymore. And that is both pathetic and disgusting.
>>
>>153805333
It's crazy, I remember watching preview of the final bebop episode for the first time and, the narrator made it a point to mention how the show was such a short ride. Nowadays, shows are lucky to get 26 eps since the standard has been sliding down to 12/13 eps.
>>
>>153807377
I think the reason for that is because back in the day the proving grounds for shorter form ideas was in OVAs. Since shows were generally expected to last over 20something episodes.

Since they don't really make OVA series anymore. And it seems like making a tv series is less costly they can throw together 12 episodes and then pray to the powers that be that they get another season or two to wrap up the story.

This is exactly why i dont watch airin anime anymore. It's a bunch of commercials for something else. These day they only make the ''testing the waters'' shows. I am afraid of picking up an interesting show, because there is a 60% chance that there will never be a second season, and thus i have wasted my time and got my hopes up for nothing. They keep making safe shit that barely makes it's money back, while not even finishing those shows. They are never gonna break out of the cycle, if they dont try something new and different. And that is why retro is always better.

Watching Dragon Dentist, it really makes me miss what OVAs were for: short concepts and higher budgets. You get to the point immediately because there's no time for filler, you get something worth seeing made with a lot of money, and it never gets too long.

I was hoping anime serial movies was going to remain a thing, like with Kara no Kyoukai and Break Blade, because that's the OVA concept taken to the next level. I guess Yamato sort of did that, but it's still structured like a regular TV series.

This is the main problem with modern anime. Whenever a whole industry focuses on one demographic, that kills it. That's what happened to American comics: they were forced by censorship laws to make everything kid-oriented, so the medium became incredibly stunted. To this day, the best-selling series are capeshit, and even that doesn't sell well.

If that's all you got out of Slayers you really should get off /a/, you're not quite on an experienced enough level to be here.

Exaggeration to prove a point can only take you so far before a statement turns into blatant lies though. Naga and Lina are a great duo, but Naga is one note and the only thing Lina can play off. In addition to this the OVA episodes themselves range from decent to extremely bad. The TV series has far more room to work with in the cast department alone because there are 5 characters playing off each other. This also fits in better with the whole series being nothing but an extremely dysfunctional D&D adventure.
