Was there really a need for Danganronpa 3 to even exist (besides the dissemenation of memes)? I was fine with 2's "our battle continues" ending. The loose ends I also didn't mind filling in with my imagination. My headcanon ended up better across the board.

I think the problem is that they began the project to end the franchise before realizing that there was no way to end it, on account of there being no real overarching plot.

Pretty much. They should've made it only the Future-arc, maybe with 24 episodes, and only have parts on the past with the FF characters, without telling how Junko started the Tragedy and how 77-B got on her side. That wouldn't make huge plot holes and would be a better ending. And also scrap the Hope episode. Fuck that pandering mess.

The Despair arc was there because they wanted to bolt a story onto the IP. They went to the start of the timeline and the end to insert a conflict that could then be resolved.
Just make it 'Killing Game 3 but this time it's personal', make Kirigiri do more after coming back than just be Naegi's happy ending and just give everything the proper room to breathe and you'd have a much better show already.

In a way, yes. It had the more interesting first couple of episodes. The beginning of Future was rather slow and gave too many episodes to the 76th class, but Despair got really retarded after Junko showed up and every episode was basically her giving exposition about how shit her plan was because the writers didn't know what to do. Both were bad, Despair went full shit first, Future was a little more consistent.

For me Despair was more fun because it was just character interactions at first, it was kinda fillery but it was amusing at least while Future was slow. Eventually Future got more interesting but in a bad way as I wanted to know what dumb shit they were going to pull next after Aoi and Monaca happened while Despair just got slowly worse, though it still had it's moments like Hopeman's got a gun. Despair dissapointed more since it had a stronger start but Future was still weaker overall and mostly only had memes going for it.
