It's the first chapter and you can already tell the exact episodic formula it's going to follow for the foreseeable future. As likeable as the first chapter was, the series is going to depend on the quality of humour, and even that might not save it if (when) the battle arcs start. I think it's going to wind up as a less interesting Samon.

Say what you want about KND, but it had a strong introductory chapter and you can't immediately tell where it's going from there. If it keeps following the flow of the first chapter, it's going to end up being a beautiful trainwreck.

We Never Learn may just end up being Nisekoi: Brotherhood, but at least it has a wonderfully meta-ironic translated name.

I'd say the big problem with "gag manga" is that they focus on making jokes (gags), not on making you laugh.

It's a difficult to describe difference, but a proper comedy is "just funny". The characters and situations work well together and create humor. A gag manga typically tries, and hard, to make jokes. Jokes, all the time, ever three panels. I've never liked gag manga because of this.

The really sad part is that a legitimately great premise would be the sequel to this series. Imagine an SoL/gag manga about Poro after he comes back from the human world about him trying to culturally revolutionize the demon world. I might be biased because I actually like Samon, but I think this series is off to a much weaker start. The characters in that have at least two dimensions, Poro is struggling to present one. Even the first chapter of Samon did a much better job of introducing conflict, both physical and emotional. Poro made the mistake of having an overpowered protagonist, but unlike OPM and Mob, it doesn't have some kind of decent emotional conflict. There just isn't much potential to raise any emotional stakes, since the hostage situation already happened, so all we have to look forward to is fish-out-of-the-water gags and demons of the week getting one-shot.

Honestly, humour is totally subjective and all, but when I read something like Poro, I can't shake the feeling that it's written by someone totally unfunny. With other series it's sometimes translation/context issues, or just a difference in sense of humour, but Poro just isn't funny.
