1)A good physical design. His appearance, his way of dressing, the characteristic signs on his body need to talk for him. An aesthetically interesting character already has some starting points, even without speaking.
2)He must have a personality and opinions, but it's important that the story put clear why the character has developed this way of thinking. If a character acts like an asshole because he has a good reason to do so, then a viewer can understand him better and maybe even siding with him. Flaws are important for a character, but it is always better to emphasize why the character has these flaws, because flaws without an adequate explanation are likely to make the character a "closed castle" and this... and so in real life... makes someone easily obnoxious. People hate what they can not understand. Same thing for his strengths.
If a character has struggled in front of the viewer's eyes to deserve the title of "the best", then he's not perceived as a Gary Stue.
The problem is when a character start his story already at maximum power, or gets a unique special skill for free ... because the writer has decided so. Modern Japanese like this, but historically it's something that make readers angry because they believe that the MC has not earned that power. "Recommended" people are always unlikable.
3)He must have an objective and must act to conquer it.

Anyway, characters like Harima Kenji in School Rumble are excellent examples of MCs that are really good. He stands out, has his own personality, emotions, opinions, likes, dislikes, isn't a sissy average joe with no backbone unless it deals with confessing to the girl he has a crush on, and isn't afraid to hate a girl because he disagrees with what he thinks is her life philosophy. And in saying the last part, his perception is not without err, showing he can misunderstand people. Which is what pisses me off about know-it-alls who act like they can observe just about anything and be totally on the mark with what they say about something.

I think it's important for the MC to fit the show they're in. I prefer certain types over others onbiously.
I also like MC's that are well rounded in terms of being the main character.
I think a good example is Akko from LWA, shes a great focal point for the story, you like to see her grow so the story can focus there. She's good at some stuff and bad at a lot of stuff, plus you can feel for her super easy. She's also hilarious.

MC's in shonen also need to be well rounded, like I enjoy I'LL FIGHT FOR MY FRIENDS but they need to have other stuff going on at the same time or it just becomes boring.
