Asuka has always been envious of Rei, it's a part of the character just as it's a part of the character of Rei to not give a damn about Asuka's pettiness. Rei is a rival to Asuka, and she can't stand losing to her, and early on probes out Rei for romantic ties with Shinji, and finally loses it when she is soundly defeated by Rei, metaphorically near the end of the story.

If you like Asuka over Rei, you didn't get Evangelion.

Asuka is a strong warning to the otaku about what happens when you delve too deeply into your own delusions and refuse to confront your problems. That's why Asuka is obnoxious, weird and eventually disliked by virtually everyone she gets to know, and it's why she spirals down into her own destruction in a pathetic display of weakness and inability to cope with change and reality. When Anno wrote the story, he knew exactly what he was doing.

The otaku has always had an unquenchable thirst for childish, lolita types with added cliched slapstick romance, it has been the bread and butter of otaku anime since the first time a japanese person thought about putting several anime pictures together to make a video. Enter Asuka, a character that's almost mocked for being an "idol type" in the show, but whom everyone thinks is a lousy person in reality. So Anno showed them the reality of such a shallow one-note character, that it'd be weak, pathetic and ultimately collapse under it's own overblown ego.

But Anno understimated the otaku's aptitude for escapism. Despite scenes depicting Shinji's masturbating to a lifeless Asuka, representing how the otaku simply use Asuka for sexual gratification whenever it suits them, they missed the point. Horrifyingly enough, many actually used this as proof they loved each other, and escaped into a fantasy world where they pretended Asuka was their wife.

Asuka fans today only pretend half of the character actually exist, despite it being a major plot point of the character to not do that, as Asuka herself is forced to reject her delusions by Rei's instrumentality in the final episodes.

Well that's not what happened at all. If you recall, Asuka herself is a doll, who has problems with that. Her caretakers in the original called Asuka a doll, and she has flashbacks of fears for being a doll. Rei has no such fears at all, and at every turn it's Rei they have to depend on when the going gets tough - or Shinji.

Asuka is a brainwashed little puppet girl, who is programmed to believe that piloting EVA is the only thing she can do. Maybe they tried to do that with Rei, but they failed because Rei has no such slave tendencies.

Rei and Asuka are supposed to be "yin and yang" in many respects, and this is also the case here. Where Rei has a tendency too look at reality for what it is and work with it, Asuka is not capable of doing that because she lacks her own will yet.

So because Asuka is programmed to pilot the EVA, and believe she's the best at it, Rei becomes her rival. Even in love, because you see Asuka make insinuations towards Shinji that they're dating - she's probing.

She's also envious of Rei's status as the "favorite", something she mentions more than once.

The beauty of it was that Rei never was a doll. The Rei/Asuka dynamic in NGE is a complete subversion of all preconceived notions of how artificial vs real humans work.

Evangelion harps on the idea that "Piloting the EVA isn't happiness", and urges the characters to find their own reason for living, even if it is difficult. Rei is completely free from the EVA, if there were no more EVA's, Rei would not care or be hurt by it, because Rei has found herself a personality she can be stable on. Asuka on the other hand, is still repeating things she was brainwashed to as a child, that she could only ever pilot the EVA.

So while Rei has the cliche backstory of someone who is a puppet, she never was. Asuka who had the prodigy backstory, actually was a puppet.

The original series shows this by having Asuka become a lifeless husk with no iwll, and ending her that way. Asuka is not a "reflecting" character. Consider Shinji, or Rei, Asuka's antithesis. What the series is trying to tell you that doing like Asuka is wrong, because you only end up in a ditch.

But do like Rei, think about your actions, your feelings and honestly accept them without lying to yourself, and you'll break free. That's what Rei's character is about, of "understanding" others around you, and yourself. By doing that, you can take a step forward. End of Evangelion symbolically shows this by having Rei become a giant, winged goddess of self-actualization.

It is through Rei's effort that Asuka's life is eventually saved, and that she may return to normal despite having died a gruesome death.

Rei rejects Gendo because over the course of the series, starting since the beginning arguably, their relationship has been souring. Rei gradually gravitates towards Shinji, who offers Rei a more genuine form of kindness and compassion, a form of love she suspects she hasn't been getting from Gendo.

I'm saying Kaworu fans are more or less sad wretches that do everything in their power to make their originally irrelevant husbando look important. At this stage, Japan is blown away, the ANTI-AT-field is generated, and everyone is about to die. The MP-EVA's have seized control already. The destruction of mankind had already happened, and would happen if not Rei had interfered.

Rei gives Shinji a choice, by calming him down and letting him think about what he's doing rationally. The whole process actually begins before Rei even merges with Lilith.

Then it was always Rei's character-arc to finally return to the "nothingness" whence she came, to Lilith or even, beyond. The ultimate freedom, which is why Rei bounds over time and space, and goes back to episode 1.

Rei was never human in the first place. It's a silly sci-fi cliche to think she'd suddenly become human or want to, when she's actually a Godlike figure.

Actually it's Shinji effort that Asuka and everybody else get saved. Rei did only one thing in that, she chose Shinji over Gendo and let him decide the outcome of third impact. escapism is delving into what isn't there over what is. Rei's development as a growing willful person and individual is there, on tape, but Shinji and Asuka's romance adventure together will always be fan fiction as far as NGE and EoE is concerned.

Won't disagree that Shinji's kindness is, romantic and traditional as that may be in storytelling, the reason for why some things go well in this story, particularly as far as Rei is concerned.

For Rei there never really was such a choice to begin with, the real choice lies in managing to have the strength to understand yourself and others, even if it hurts you. That's what Rei did, and Asuka didn't do. That's why the series is actually telling you that Asuka is the "wrong path", while Rei is the "right path". That's what leads Rei to reconsider her relationships, reach out to people (even if she fails), and eventually condemn Gendo as someone who has been suppressing her.

Thanks to Rei's efforts as well as Shinji's, Asuka's life was saved, but it's never delved into whether or not Asuka will succeed like they did.
