Either the MC gets some power which theoretically makes him stronger than the main girl, but is semi useless in a solo fight, kinda like with freezing (although he's not completely useless, especially later on). Or you have an MC which is basically a side character, cause main girl pushes the action along. OR main girl and possible harem contenders become tools for the powerless but cunning MC, so while this kind of MC deserves the MC title, since he is the driving force of the story, the female characters become assets to him instead of being independent.

It all comes down to either having girl be MC and insert-kun be the damsel in distress or have MC-kun by some kind of bullshit metric be able to surpass main girl despite being powerless.

Brynhildr MC doesn't feel as much of an insert, because of his perfect memory and cunning. On the other hand you have full retard MCs who's only redeeming factors are "being nice", "having a weirdly specific power which only works with [girl]" or "having the courage to never give up".

All of these are bland and poison the strong fighterXweak commander dynamic.

Either turn the man into a complete damsel, or give him qualities which your everyday talentless otakuhikkineetvirginm@ster doesn't have. Like make him courageous, smart and ready to take the initiative, but unable to fight like main girl due to injury/curse/birthdefect, etc. Make it someone who will do well within his own frame of possibilities, without making it all about him during combat. Make him someone with qualities which would relistically speaking make the strong girl feel drawn toward him. Make him useful, without making his niche become some kind of omnipotent power. It doesn't even have to be a wimp. Make him a soldier whose skills aren't needed anymore in a cute girls having superpowers scenario. Despite that he provides tactical knowledge and sniper cover as a diversion or something to that effect.
