It has serious arcs earlier then that, but it's like 20 comedy episodes for each serious arc (which generally last about 4 or 5 episodes), and the first serious arc only begins by episode 59, although there are some one shot serious episodes here and there before that.

It's never *just* straight gag, all the time tho'.
The first season might seem like that, but it's all about character introductions and mild foreshadowing. The 2nd season already cranks up action and PLOT a fuckton with the legendary Benizakura arc, but even before it there is quite handful of memorable scenes.

Gintama works so well because the few "more serious" parts are such stark contrast to the overall tone of the show. And even then, you can usually expect things to lighten up at some point.

I hate the serious/shounen arcs. So muchcringey/annoying shit. I think the shinsengumi rebellion was the worst, I raged.

At least those parts have some fairly good comedy in the intro episodes. ANd some aren't bad, like the onmyouji or Kyuubei arc (toilets!).

Takasugi guys & Kagurabro a shits, absolute shits. Kagura's bro is probably the single most annoying shounenshit in Gintama.

There's only two serious arcs I enjoyed in Gintama and they both took place in the red light district. The one with that old Yato guy and the one with Tsukuyo's sensei (final battle in the anime was amazing).

Disregard what that anon said about the 'legendary' Benizakura Arc. It's way overrated and honestly some better arcs are both the Yagyuu arc and Yoshiwara in Flames arc. Both introduce really good side characters and have great a great mix of serious and comedy. Though the Yagyuu arc is the more comedic of the two.

After Yoshiwara in Flames though you're going to be getting a lot of sweet little moments in random arcs.
