I watched Macross: DYRL sometime ago and now I can't get the song out of my head. I didn't even like the movie, it was ok, but danm, Ai Oboeteru Imasuka is beautiful and I feel like crying everytime I hear it, yet I can't stop lisening

I've been watching Space Cobra recently. 8 episodes in and I'm kind of sick of the Royal sister's arc, but I'd say I'm enjoying it overall. first episode was easily the best

plan is to watch every single Lupin episode and most of the movies after this. I've only watched the dubbed episodes from season 2 and a few of the movies, so that'll be interesting. one of my favorites from when I was younger

how's Captain Harlock?
>>
>>153648486

Have you see any other Macross before that? First time I saw DYRL I was kind of lost, but after getting to know Macross more, it easily became one of my top films.

Harlock's fantastic. It might need a BD these days to compete with the other top shows of that era, especially to help out the sound. I don't know how any company ever pushed Harlock in the states without the 78 series. Maybe for Waga Seishun no Arcadia because that's a good origin, but the series explores exactly how Harlock operates and his core beliefs.

Only watched DYRL, I felt kinda lost too and felt the film was kinda rushed but since its an shortern version of the original tv show I guess its ok. I think you can watch the movie just for the music and visuals but if you want the complete version of the story I think only the tv series would deliver a satisfying story.

Right now I'm watching Macross Plus and I plan to watch 7 afterwards but I have no interest in watching the mordern ones like Frontier and Delta

>>153648954

Watching SDF Macross gives you perspective and background on the characters. DYRL is a compressed version, but it's like watching the ultimate retelling, where you get to see the characters given slightly tweaked personalities.

A Girl in Gaea is the same thing, only comes out worse for wear unless you prefer a more emo approach. But I don't think any film gets the retelling aspect done as well and as fulfilling as DYRL manages.

I liked the episode with the bomb defusing and the start of the second half with the military occupation, the buildup of all that was excellent. But I can't tell what kind of series it was supposed to be. It wasn't too much of an action show, no character development, not much drama. The majority of it just felt like it was just watching people... do stuff.
>>
>>153646140

I don't understand why you're watching everything except the original. "I can't find a torrent" and "it's too old" are not excuses.
>>
Getting towards the end of the Patlabor TV series. It's definitely my favorite of the franchise.
>>
>>153650910
Already watched DYRL. Although the tv show has a more fleshed out story, you can just watch the movie and get what all was about
>>
>>153651169

Eh, not totally. I think the emotional investment is there once you finished the TV show, enhances the movie.
>>
Recently finished Dirty Pair (all of it minus Flash), loved it. Gunsmith Cats was also really good. Been watching Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight, not sure if I want to continue or not.
>>
>>153651169
They aren't the same at all. You seem to be under the mistaken impression that DYRL is just a copy-paste of the series like the Gundam movies are. It's a companion piece to the original, not a replacement.

It's like reading the wikipedia page for a 36-episode series rather than actually watching it. Whatever floats your boat though.
>>
>>153651328

Did you see the original Lodoss yet? The most I've seen of CotHK is the OP, like 50 times.
>>
>>153651328
Since you liked Gunsmith Cats you should watch Riding Bean now

>>153651264
>>153651337
Well, can't say the movie made me want more SDF Macross, but I think now its worth a look. I was watching Plus just because Shinichiro Watanabe and Yoko Kano are involved, and planned to watch 7 afterwards just to see where all this goes. Can't say I'm a major Macross fan, but its been pretty ok so far, I understand why it was one of the most beloved franchises of otakkus back in the day
>>
>>153650680
Persia, Emi and Yumi yes but also older series like Minky Momo and Majokko Meg.

I would like to watch all the old classics from the 60's and 70's too one day.

That's because they watched the series and it was capped off emotionally by DYRL. The love for DYRL goes beyond it just being any movie.

Lodoss's OVA doesn't have much going for it besides good character designs and detailed lineart (at the expense of being actually animated most of the time).

The TV series has a fantastic Ashram, Spark isn't actually as bad of a character as his name and bright blue hair might lead you to believe, and he has a better party than Parn on top of that. The animation is low-budget TV, but it does have a lot of moments where some guest director or animator wanders in and improves the animation for a bit.

That being said you should watch the OVA first.

The spin-off Crystania movie and sequel OVA aren't bad either if you want more of Lodoss's brand of classic fantasy.

>>
>>153653497
It almost seems like a standard magical girl show, but it isn't. The slight villains of the week motif only exists to really flesh out the cast. There's also an rpg like nature to the storytelling, with the protagonists moving from point a to b, while leveling up if you will. The narrative seems almost basic, but the overall build up and payoff makes it worth it. There tends to be a shift in style for that light comedic antics once in a while. It's a gorgeous show with beautiful visuals.

Too bad the action choreography is absolute trash. Throwing a bunch of weird shit into the arena doesn't make the actual fight less dull either. Utena blocks for a minute then wins in one attack. Repeat twenty times. It's the weakest part of the show.

If you're gonna make the audience sit through 3-5 minutes of stock footage in the leadup to it you might as well bother to make a decent fight scene.

I'm watching Dunbine. Currently at episode 30.
Great start, great sense of scale of the conflict and one of the most crude Tomino shows, but he reuses too many of his favorite tropes and the middle parts is kinda getting repetitive.
The mecha design is beautiful.
>>
>>153646650

I know it's a shallow complaint, but Mokkori antics threw me off the series. It was a bit too goofy, somehow CH kept from Lupin for some time because I used a broad brush.

Is that the one where the blobs try and take over Tetsuro and Maetel's body? For me the Firefly girl episode is probably the best in the series tied with the guy who lived on a planet with his own clones but I agree. It's awfully repetitive but manages to make up for it with how interesting each world is they visit.

>>153670069

I enjoyed ZZ except for how rough it was in the first couple episodes and getting used to the tone but you get over those after Moon Moon. I started watching Turn A last night and I'm about 8 episodes in, I'm surprised by how much it didn't feel like a traditional Gundam in the beginning until the actual war started to kick off between the Moonrace and Earth. I was enjoying ZZ until last dozen of episodes. It's a fucking mess, it's trying to be Z with joke characters it introduced and its climax is just a repetition of Gryps conflict only if it was 3 sided bickering between 2 sides of AXIS and AEUG derps around like a fly somewhere I guess.

Enjoy Dublin while you can, it's last decent part of ZZ.

I haven't read Angel Heart yet, but despite having some of the same characters I read it has nothing to do with City Hunter and takes place in an alternate universe or something. So I'll put it on hold for now.

Subbed Shin-Chan is much less humorous than I thought it would be. I watched both super old and new episodes, but they didn't seem much different content-wise. It's kinda boring, actually.
I'm used to the german dub which is vastly different from the original, or at least I think so. I can't remember much, but I do believe it was funnier and also broke the fourth wall (which was similiar to the English dub IIRC).

I'm watching the Dirty Pair OVAs having finished the TV series. It's great. I really like the dub for the OVAs, it's a shame they didn't go back and do it for the series. I really think Dirty Pair is a better show than Cowboy Bebop, as far as sci-fi anime goes.

I've also been trying to get through Galaxy Express 999 but it's kind of a pain in the ass to be honest. The atmosphere is incredible and they frequently manage to do some pretty impressive Twilight Zone-esque stories in the space of 20 minutes, but the amount of overblown melodrama is just ridiculous. Stuff that's meant to be tragic and deeply moving ends up being outright hilarious - the young couple killing themselves because they were like 20 and didn't want to get any older, the planet where they PUT UNBREAKABLE ARMOUR ON INSECTS and then wondered why they were all dying out, etc. Most of the "doomed planets" they happen upon seem to have really stupid problems which could be easily solved, but can't because everyone's emo as fuck. I know pretty much everything in this show is a metaphor, but still it gets monotonous and draining really fast, can't watch more than like three episodes a week at this point.

Also watching Sailor Moon, but it's not really leaving much of an impression on me. It's fun and the characters are good, but every episode is the same thing happening over and over. I'm not too far in but I'm already sick of watching the same three transformation and attack sequences every episode, and every enemy (what the hell are they anyway? Are they a race of demons who are born and live like humans, or are they just weird magical shit being summoned by the Dark Kingdom people, or what?) being dealt with through the Sailors just spamming their attacks. I know that's just par for the course with magical girl shows, but still, I'm starting to wish the monsters would just fuck off for a few episodes so the show could focus on the interaction between Usagi, Rei and Ami, which is the strong point.
>>
>>153681469
>I finished Yawara over a week ago

Just watch the depressing series: Kino, Haibane Renmei, Saikano, Boogiepop, Texhnolyze, Gunslinger Girl, Wolf's Rain, Lain, Zettai Shounen, Arjuna, Noir

Not saying early 00s was good, but there's still a good amount of stuff to watch from those years. Trying to keep up with new stuff and explore older ones is a struggle.
>>
>>153684771
What kind of stuff do you want?

If you just want generic all-genre recommendations, then I don't know how unpopular/obscure these ones are, but:
Galaxy Angel (comedy about an extremely inept all-female squad of soldiers/mercenaries in space)

Full Moon wo Sagashite (shoujo series about a girl with terminal throat cancer gets to fulfil her dream of being a singer, but supernatural shit keeps fucking everything up)

Hikari to Mizu no Daphne (comedy with a bit of drama about yet another all-female squad of inept mercenaries. don't be misled by the godawful costume design, it's not an ecchi show at all)

Maria-sama Ga Miteru (drama at a catholic girl's school about the not-romantic-but-clearly-more-than-platonic relationship between a new student and her older mentor)

Maybe it was more popular but MI is seminal, it was the first of its kind. As always with Rumiko Takahashi.

Never seen or reach Touch, but I agree with your view, it's always just seemed like a pinnacle work of sports anime, but one in a long preceding chain of other important works, going back at least as far as Star of the Giants.

What would have been influences on MI other than Rumiko herself? I'm not familiar enough with the shoujo/josei work of the early 70s.

I would read Touch, but go in knowing nothing about the series. It's pretty beautiful, but it sags in the latter half. Just remember, it's not really a sports manga - sports is just a vehicle to tell the story. Also, Adachi is a master at the unsaid - pay attention to the mood and the meaningful glances, and what the characters struggle to say to each other. It's easy to just fly through the series, but you'd be missing out on what makes it a classic.

For the most part, the way Eva handled this is very superficial, as the only way to actually understand most of the characters and get inside their heads it to make a ton of assumptions about them based on ambiguous, contextual information that you can't be certain of the purpose of.

It amuses me that despite their claims to understand Eva in significant depth, tons of obsessive Eva fans will assume things like the idea that Asuka was even honestly interested in actually having a relationship with Shinji, since they don't get girls like her.

angel cop is pretty unique and daring.

Unlike other anime that try to make you like or relate to the protagonist right off the bat so that you're worried for her when she has to go through hard times; Angel Cop introduces you to a complete asshole and the whole thing becomes about "what will it take for her to start becoming nice?". Which is also pretty compelling. It's the hardass anti-hero character arc done right.

When most people try to write an anti-hero they just write a hero who happens to be really inexpressive or kinda dickish or ridiculous, but it's immediately obvious that this character is really cool deep down and just emotionally troubled.

Angel is obviously a massive cunt and has no excuse for being one.
And it takes her partner getting turned into a death machine, the death of tons of civilians, and Lucifer for her to start showing some humanity and heroism. As a result it feels a lot more fulfilling than many other character arcs.

And I like the general theme of how ordinary evil is made meaningless by progressively greater evils. It's really ballsy.

also Angel is cute.

I'm sure I got it on nyaa years ago, though I guess it might not have seeds anymore, this was in like 2012/13. It's really not that great anyway, you're not missing out on a whole pile.

Back on subject, current pre-00s things in my lineup are the original Berserk anime and Captain Tsubasa. Berserk obviously being the better of the two, but Captain Tsubasa is fun when they're not spending 20 episodes on one 45-minute game of fitba. The OP is catchy and I'm a sucker for idiotic low-risk melodrama, which is pretty much all it consists of. There's no English subs online past episode 118, though, so I had to buy the final volume DVD in Italian. I knew my undergrad degree would come in handy someday

Also, if we're bringing early 00s into it as well, I'm about to start watching Grenadier soon. I just finished Trigun a little while ago which I really enjoyed, so I guess it'll be interesting to stack them up against each other.
>>
Just started Musekinin Kanchou Tylor, a few episodes in. It's great so far but the protagonist is really fucking annoying (which is kind of the point I guess).

Still, there's been at least one genuine laugh per episode, which is more than you can say for about 90% of anime comedies.

Kagura has a raw with external japanese stereo tracks (I guess from DVDs). I tried only the first episode, but it was in sync with the Gokmen release too. I think it is cut and synced audio for BDs altough he doesn't mention it in the description on nyaa. So you can try that.

Question: is the old 90s dub of Sailor Moon worth watching? I've already seen the real version in full, but I've always kind of liked those old dubs where everything's hilariously changed for an American audience.

Is it like, just Sailor Moon but with a bunch of shit removed and censored, or does it stand on its own merits as a Saturday morning cartoon type of thing? Can't really find any decent write-ups of it online.
>>
Holy shit, stop watching dubs, faggots.
>>
>>153705225
As long as the script is intact and uncut, there's no real reason not to watch dubs.

Just watch the first episode of any new show you're starting with English audio while having the subtitles on too, so you can compare to see if the dub is faithful, the quality of voice acting and which script has better wording, then just stick with whatever one you liked more.

It's not awful. They actually cut quite a bit, but I never found it noticeable. There used to be a site that catalogued every edit. Most episodes had about 30seconds of random cuts if only so they could squeeze in the cheesy "Sailor Moon Says" segment. The edits tapered off after the original series.

Of course they changed the OP and ED, the names of some of the characters and almost all the monsters, and tried very hard to make Zoisite seem like a woman, but other than that, the biggest offense I remember was butchering the finale of season 1, cutting the final battle from three episodes to two.

>As long as the script is intact and uncut, there's no real reason not to watch dubs.
The acting is shit and it's not the original one. Nuff said.
>>
>>153705562
>The acting is shit
Hardly. Maybe if you're watching some dodgy mid-80s VHS dub of an unknown OVA done for a budget of $4 in a garage somewhere, but not when professional voice actors are hired. Most dubs I've watched have good acting.

Do you also think Japanese voice actors (inb4 SEIYUU) are incapable of turning in a bad performance?

>it's not the original one
Neither is a subbed version. You're still relying on someone to tell you what the characters are saying and repeat it back to you in your own language.

I'm not American, we actually have very good dubbers. Everyone knows English dubs are shit because there's no need for voice actors considering all the movies are made in Hollywood.
I don't know Japanese but most of the time I know when the subs differ from what's being said anyway.

What the fuck is Kawajiri Yoshiaki up to these days? Just chilling and waiting for death?
Been going through his early shit and kinda depressing that he's doing only storyboard for seasonal stuff.

>we actually have very good dubbers.

...then why are you complaining about dubs in general?

>Everyone knows English dubs are shit because there's no need for voice actors considering all the movies are made in Hollywood.

That's a hell of a sentence.

>I don't know Japanese but most of the time I know when the subs differ from what's being said anyway.

Psychic ability?

It's not just outright differing from what's being said, though, it's phrasing and making things sound natural. Everyone compares different fansub groups when choosing how to watch a show, I don't see why including the dub as an option is such a bad thing (especially if it's a better translation than all the available subs).

That's why I suggested here >>153705308 that the best course of action is to compare them during the first episode. If the sub script is better or the dub actors piss you off, go with the sub. Or vice versa of course, if the Japanese acting is unbearable.

My absolute top favourite animie movie.

NOT. ORIGINAL.
>>153706071
>Psychic ability?
I don't get all the nuances but I get the general meaning, most of the time. Seasonal anime isn't literature, they tend to use the same expressions constinously.
>>
>>153706413
>NOT. ORIGINAL.

Neither are subs. Didn't we just do this?

Unless you mean it's inherently better to watch with the Japanese voice actors, in which case, why? Sure, there's often great performances that shine through the language barrier (I can't watch the Azumanga Daioh eng dub just because Osaka's Japanese voice is so perfect), but most of the time there's no advantage to listening to the Japanese audio over dubbed audio if the dub actors fit the characters just as well.

Do you object to non-English speakers listening to Western shows and movies dubbed into their native language because it's not the original?
>>
>>153706618
>Neither are subs
Holy shit! If you play the dub you can't play the original voice acting, if you play the subs you still listen to the original acting.

Is it so hard to understand?

>Do you object to non-English speakers listening to Western shows and movies dubbed into their native language because it's not the original?
Of course.

How did this turn into a dub vs sub thread? Just watch whichever one you want. Who gives a fuck about "original" voice acting? Anime isn't some form of high art, it's a fucking cartoon for kids and young adults.

Kill yourself.
Anime is just a medium like any other, it has no intrinsecal value.

He said distinctly 80's though, which it is. It's SO 80's it hurts.

Why wouldn't you? You can either listen to the original performances, even if you don't instantly understand them... or you can listen to some assclowns trying their best to imitate the original actors using their limited range of voices.
>>
>>153709257

You just perfectly described nip voice acting though.

Watching Sailor Moon
On S now and the utena parallels are starting to show.

what is Ranma about? All I know it's boy turning into girl because of hot/cold water, but is it about anything more? Or just 100% giggles because random genderswap and hiding the truth from someone. Or does he come to understand the girls point of view? But it's light comedy mostly, no?

I have been watching Shin Cutie Honey. I put it off because people said it was bad but I don't dislike it. It's pretty GAR and the OP version is probably the best, the music is pretty good in general. I feel it did not retain the wonky feeling of 70's Cutie Honey, it gets way too serious way too fast and then the comedy parts feel out of place, but that's my only complain. Also the titty panther claws were weird but your dick gets used to it.

Reinhard and Yang are fighting for causes that they actually believe in. Yang feels guilty over all the people who died for him, and Oberstein calls out Reinhard's guilt too.

Reuental feels nothing, believes nothing, and his soldiers all died for Reuental's lulz.
