It means it's not a focal part of the series. Mikoto is not a main character in Index. In Railgun she is, but not Index.

A lot of OT was Touma's actions revolving around what happened to Index, but do you see any big romance between them? It's not because of her love with Touma, it's because she's a high level esper. There's been more than enough to show that the process fucks people up. It's just being demonstrated through her love-turned-obsession. Up until recently, all we've seen from Misaka in that regard is her aggressive Tsundere side (which could have been subtle foreshadowing) but it's becoming increasingly apparent that her love has become and to the point of piloting a war machine to try and "stand on the same stage" as him.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was what Kamachi had planned for her character the whole time. I reckon her desire to get stronger will parallel that of early Accelerator. Leading to her doing something stupid while being blinded by her desire, (another Lv 6 shift attempt most likely, only this time willingly).

How will Mikoto get her heart broken?
