Archetypes as in aggro, midrange, control and combo; yugioh decks really don't fit those descriptions that well given it's lack of a resource system.

Archetype in the yugioh sense as a collection of cards; in the current meta, not any more. Every deck runs the Zoodiac Engine because it's just too good not to, so about 6-8 Cards in main and 5 in Extra are devoted to it. The previous meta (last week in the tcg) had a much higher amount of variety in viable decks

Sorry mate, one thing a lot of people who are only acquainted with the old game (pre XYZ) don't realise is that the game is even more different than they expected. You'd be lucky if you even managed to flip summon it once successfully. The current play style is all about being able to search out and summon powerful monsters in a single turn AND negate the shit out of multiple things, again, all in one turn.

See the current Blue Eyes deck for instance. Managed to summon one Blue eyes monster? Oh, go ahead and summon another one while triggering its effect of destroy/banishing opponent's card or some shit. You'll barely have a chance to even set your Needle Worm once.

The materials just prevent you from using a LINK 3 to summon another LINK 3.

The way I see it is that when using a LINK X monster for a Link summon, it counts as X materials on its own. So you could use 2 LINK 2s for a LINK 4, or a LINK 3 and a non-Link.

One thing I don't like about modern YuGiOh, or at least as modern as it was the last time I played, was how every deck was an archetype deck. I used to always play a deck that focused on getting high ATK and direct damage very quickly, I'd kick a lot of ass with it, but eventually I didn't kick any more ass. So then I learned to play Ghostricks because they were cute, and I kicked some ass again, but I feel like the deck was already built for me. Then there's Vanguard, I don't play Vanguard but it seems like literally every deck is an archetype deck in that game, like they just decided to make their own YGO except only taking the aspects that "worked" and avoiding all the mistakes and artifacts YGO made over the years.
Not like I'm an expert at TCGs or anything, I'm just a casual but that's how it looks like to me. I've never even played with real cards, only on GBA/DS/PSP.

First off, The Pendullum zones were fused with the S/T zones. This means you set the pendullum cards in the outermost pendullum zones. As such, you can't set pendullum scales when you have spells or traps set in there, as well as you have only 3 S/T zones with both pendullum scales set.

Moreover, there is now only one zone that you can summon monsters from the extra deck without using the Link monsters (those allow you to use some of the other zones for extra deck summoning). I am NOT sure how this interacts with summoning face-up pendullums from the Extra deck, but I'm afraid they'd also be limited to that one spot.

Buy a structure deck (ideally 3 copies of the same structure deck, but let's not get ahead of ourselves). That should be a major improvement in of itself, for they have a build-in strategy, synergy, and playable card ratios.

With that, you should have a pool of cards that play well with each other from which you can experiment and learn about deckbuilding.

All the structure decks that came out during the last 3-4 years could be made into playable decks when combining chosen cards from 3 copies (never competitive outright, but often able to put up a fight at the time of their release and sometimes only requiring a couple cards to become semi-competitive or even outright good in case of HERO Strike).

The drawback is that you need to place two pendulum cards on the field to even summon (so a 3 card investment to summon one monster), if your summon gets negated you lose everything you tried to summon, and pendulum cards in the pendulum zone can be destroyed with any number of spell destroying cards which results in you being unable to pendulum summon unless you have another pendulum to fill that spot (god help you if you don't have one with a decently usable scale) within your hand.

Also, you can only pendulum summon once a turn.

The reason one monster is placed above the others is because extra deck monsters (Fusion, Synchro, XYZ) can now only be placed in a single spot on the field (a new 6th monster zone placed above the others on the field), unless that spot is held by a Link monster which has arrows on the card itself which permit you to summon the other extra deck monsters onto the monster zones on the field at the exact spaces which the arrows point to.

XYZ monsters (black cards) are monsters that require overlapping monsters of the same level. The deck being displayed is a special case that also allows you to overlay XYZ monsters over XYZ monsters as per the card's effects.

Monster 1 is a Rank 4 XYZ monster

Monster 2 is a 4S monster that can be special summoned from your hand by discarding one continuous spell card

The continuous spell card once destroyed by card effect allows you to draw 3 cards then banish two in your hand.

You banish a monster whos effect is when this card is removed from your hand by the effect of a spell card special summon Monster 4 in face up attack position

And just like that you have magically gotten TWO 4S monsters on the field and can now Xyz Summon into Monster 1.

The Xyz monster has an effect:
Detach 1 xyz material from this card to select one continuous spell card in your graveyard and add it to your hand.

Now special summon Monster 2 again and repeat this until you have three Xyz monsters on the field IN ONE TURN.

The cancer is caused by metafags discovering unstable long ass combos.

Pendulum drawbacks

- Large cards investments. You need to set scales (-2) to at least summon one. Scales occasionally have important effects here or there, but for the most part they're dead cards.

- Susceptible to being negated all at once, i.e. if you set 2 scale and summon 3. Scales are also susceptible to being destroyed by standard S/T removal, so unless you can set up a replacement you're boned

- You lose more hand advantage than XYZ/Synchro because the monster you're summoning doesn't come from the Extra Deck. You also risk bricking if you decide to a run a big boss monster to be pendulum summoned.

In overall, its a pretty weak summoning methods. The only truly OP Pendulum based decks is EmEm/PePe, and not because of the pendulum mechanics. Qli was T1 for a time due to its ability to abuse Skill Drain.
