Seriously though, what caused Japanese mainstream art to change so much? I don't want to get into the politics of it all, but this is a pretty drastic change in an entire culture's pop culture.

Sorry if this is more of a /jp/ or /int/ thread, but it seems right for /a/ to discuss how Japanese art evolved into this over time.

Disney happened.

Really though? They saw the big eyes in western cartoons and made them even bigger even though the eyes of the characters they're portraying should be slanty as fuck?
>>
>>153605677
They realized that big eyes are cute and that there was more to the world than just the same old paintings. So manga artists naturally adopted a more stylistic approach, utilizing similar techniques to the Western cartoons and comics of the time.
>>
>>153605767
But didn't this happen in the 60's or so? Were they not animating in the early 1900's like the rest of the world was? Maybe I just need to spend a few hours on Wikipedia learning about this. I thought it would be more interesting to discuss other than "the west won WW2, anime was born".

A quick glance through Wikipedia told me that they actually had a few propaganda films back in 1943. Presumably the designs diverged from the old style and became more like the ones we see today.

Plus, there's also, you know, the OP image being of a traditional painting and an anime. It's not like I can't do the same for Van Gogh's Starry Night and Wakfu.

Japs used to be manly men imperialist and were the rape kings of the world. But after nukes they become wussy american puppets who pursue peace and don't even have a real army. Their men are scared of contact with women this is a statistical fact. Japan has the largest percentage per capital of virgin men.

the obsession with cuteness and innocence. self-neutering imo due to submissiveness. the only thing moefags can hope to dominate and influence are middle school girls.

and they are the ones contributing to the fall of anime

Early Japanese animation already had American influences, presumably due to animators studying the works of Fleischer and Disney studios.

I guess you are so ignorant about Japanese culture.
At least there were already Fujyo-shits in 1000 years ago.

Were paintings ever really pop culture, prior to the 20th century? Legitimate question.

Not as widespread, obviously because of the lack of instant media, but there were artists like pic related who were invited to parties to do floor art in front of audiences who would talk about how good he was days later.

Considering how he was popular enough to have his own exhibit traveling the globe to this day, I'd say they had their own pop culture back then.

>Muh manly conqueror men who exclusively prefer tall fit girls with bitchy personalities

The reality is, there is no conqueror type that seeks to dominate defiant women outside of snm shit. In the normal world, women either become submissive in the presence of a man or they reject his legitimacy entirely. Being a moe jc doesn't really make a girl a harder target than revy, if the otaku are repulsive either way. Girls are girls barring abnormal tendencies. All 3d are animals and operate on the same mating instincts once they hit puberty.

The moe is just better if you are not into men with tits. The moe is, in real life, the hotter commodity, the thing higher value men snatch up before otaku can leave their beds. Its popular because it's what they want, what they see other men get, and what they can never have. Just like power, adventure, status, and good looks, a cute wife is one of those things everyone naturally desires. Do, don't be surprised if it shows up in a lot of escapist media.

I guess this makes moe fags even more pathetic, since their fantasy is attainable in a less ideal form and normal to pursue, instead of a complete fairy tale for sickos like loli incest in a medieval isekai

Ukiyoe -> Meiji adoption of Western art -> Norakuro + Animation from Disney -> Tezuka (in love with Disney) re-starts manga and anime in Japan.
Manga diverges into many different styles and genres after the 1960s.
Anime, however, has a mainstream. After Tezuka (Atom aka Astroboy) and his gang (Doraemon, 009), Miyazaki creates a new trend (Lupin: Caligostro, Nausicaa). Then starting in 1990s shoujo manga style big eyes are used for all the major characters. (Personally I credit Sailor Moon for this. All the characters in Yamato and Gundam don't have huge eyes, even Rose of Versailles isn't dominated by huge eyes.)
In the 2000s you start to get Moe (Lucky Star) and once they dominate, you get what you see today.

That's a silly comparison. A better comparison is early Japanese animation, which had a variety of style, the most prominent being copied and/or done in the style of American cartoons from the same era. After the post WW2 era, and the beginning of television anime, you began to see that same big eye look, but it begins to get more developed. Other animations from that era began to adopt that look, just because it looks pleasant and it works well. Seriously, just look at a couple of 60s/70s/80s anime and you'll begin to see how the art "style" developed.

Technology and mass media made it possible for easily marketable products like comics to become widely available to the general population.
As for the change in style, art is always changing and evolving. Anime and manga are marketable products, so the audience's taste is what drove this change.
