They tried to have a 'serious' plot instead of cute girls pilot cute ships. The problem was that the plot wasn't very good, and actually got less interesting and the stakes/tension lowered as the series went on. It's like a tournament arc where they fight the enemies from strongest to weakest.

What a cute bote!

GuP was superior in every aspect. This had too much TACTICOOL bullshit going on, so it was hard to follow what the hell was going on in the battles. Every bit of dialogue during battles was filled with technical jargon. Character cast was way too big, and they also tried to give each girl as much screentime as possible EVERY SINGLE EPISODE. So, what you ended up getting is 20 girls saying one line per episode and it was hard to give a fuck. It's better to do it Strike Witches style and dedicate an entire episode to a group/team. GuP didn't suffer from this because the cast was much smaller, and they made it easy to identify who was in which tank. Also, switching from serious plot to moe constantly doesn't mix well. It never has. GuP didn't take itself too seriously, but this tried too hard with the whole conspiracy thing.

All in all, terrible idea from the onstart, 6/10 because nice character designs, but really forgettable.

GuP definitely had more individual character development, but Haifuri had way better cast chemistry. One thing that I felt Haifuri achieved that GuP didn't was making the main cast feel like a team with each member having significant, fitting roles. GuP, to me, felt more like they relied on the skills on the MC too much.

There was just something so satisfying seeing the Harekaze crew do their jobs. Misaki would order something, it would travel down to the appropriate officer, who then ordered her underlings to complete the order. I never felt that cohesiveness from the tanks.

Just imagine how bad Maron and her girls must have smelled at the end of every day.

What I'm wondering is why after you determine what target you're tracking, why you can't just cross-reference in a book the intensity of the hydrophone data for rpm for that given target. Or is rangefinding data simply not labeled in terms of rpm but only in speed?

Obviously, this is a moot point, as the basic tenet of your assertion (which is that they need to have ID'd the sub first before any other determination can be made) still holds true.

The superstructure's all wrong and far too short for Nagato.

That's a pretty distinctively British superstructure with that built-up blockiness. Only the Queen Elizabeth, Warspite, and Valiant received modifications to their superstructures to look like that. And of those, three, it looks closest to post-refit Warspite. That said, the armored conning tower seems to be exposed like the pre-refit QEs.

In any case, I think calling it Nagato is pretty far off the mark.

By the way, the ship in front could easily be Barham or one of the other un-refitted QEs. Or maybe even a Revenge class. Those stubby rangefinders on the lead ship are pretty British.

Below decks, a pandemonium of girlish voices, drumming feet, and the banging of carpenters' mallets as the BULKHEADS fore and aft are struck down belowdecks, wetted FEARNOUGHT SCREENS are rigged around the hatch to the POWDER MAGAZINE and everything superfluous is struck down into the hold. The decks are liberally SANDED to absorb blood and open SCUTTLEBUTTS of water are arranged amidships, behind the GREAT GUNS.

As all hands on deck strain to see the unknown speck on the horizon wear ship to meet them, belowdecks, smoke curls from tubs of glowing SLOWMATCH already set burning in readiness. We hear a PINGING NOISE now as all idlers set about chipping the scale from CANNONBALLS to ensure they fly straight. Amidst this scene of controlled chaos, the ship's COOK and hot-blooded STEWARD, still in aprons over their BLUE SUKUMIZU, attempt to remonstrate with the MIDSHIPMEN sent to douse their galley fires.

The wind, now sweeping forward from the Tsubame's stern, freshens again. A band of low clouds form on the horizon.
Close up on a pair of NAVAL-STRIPED PANTIES as they strain against the CLOTHESPINS holding them to the STARBOARD MAINCHAINS. Suddenly they pull free and blow OVER THE SIDE, swirling in the BREEZE.

The TSUBAME reverses its turn, unmasking the GUNPORTS on its PORT SIDE. But the IMPERIEUSE has also begun a turn to starboard. As she comes about we see two things. First, a thin STREAM OF BLOOD from her scuppers, running into the sea. And second, her 20-GUN BROADSIDE, SWINGING TO BEAR.

Everyone who watched it had seen GuP prior to it and had a very similar show that they could compare it to that is superior in every objective measure.

The biggest problem with it was that the main character and captain was possibly the least suited character to that role in the extensive cast and only competent because the plot demanded it.

Even with the hamsters the show would have been way better if Mike started competent and stayed competent. None of this "Am I good enough to be a captain?" nonsense that GuP avoided, for good reason.

That is a big part of it. GuP was held together because Miho and Yukari together kept the military otaku happy. You need competent people in the main cast to stop little girls from going off track. The boat show never actually tried to go beyond cute girls playing sailors. They should have the girls being cute while off duty, but unironically being hard core seadogs while in uniform. That makes it cuter.

That is the setting, I am objecting to the setting.

I don't care that they did as well as could be expected for a bunch of kids. Because having them acting within the competency of children defeats the entire purpose of the genre. The genre is about portraying competent people doing grown up things, while in the body of little girls. You need it to make the story work. By making the girls being actual little girls, it becomes a story about children playing.

This show betrayed the entire point of taking war machines and let girls control them. The appeal is to see children acting wise beyond their years. The juxtaposition is the core of what makes such shows work.

There would not have been a need for hamsters, if the girls were not so underpowered. If the girls were expected to be as competent as trained and fully grown men, like almost every other example in anime, there would not be a need to created as artificial conflict that could be easily resolved.

Ironic that the show tried to act cute, then showed that they intended to tell a serious story by changing the title, only to then have the plot being cute once again. They should have never tried to pretend it was anything serious to begin with.

Sunless Sea is mostly about the atmosphere.
The general feeling of loneliness while exploring a vast, malicious dark ocean without having to resort to cannibalism to sustain your ship.

It's nice, but the gameplay isn't that great and it obviously lacks cute girls. But I think it's free on steam for the weekend, so give it a try.

Show tried to have its cake and eat it too, for many different cakes.

Show was ostensibly in a more serious settings with higher stakes (life and death) than GuP but the characters treated it with even less seriousness. GuP makes sure you know it's a safe sport even if that doesn't actually make sense, Haifuri tells you there's real danger and the characters come off as suicidal or retarded.

The main character is a wannabe-Miho without the competence. She goes through the exact same character arc three times, only to end up back where she started. Half of the penultimate episode was her going through the same arc she'd already gone through twice. If these girls are supposed to be actually putting their lives on the line they should find something better than the power of friendship to protect them.

There weren't even many ship battles, multiple episodes had nothing to do with the ships at all and could have been done in a high school. It felt like they were just checking off boxes for a standard moe show. They got near the end and realized that they didn't have a festival episode so they made one when they shouldn't have been anywhere near the equator.

At least we're actually getting a new season of GuP.
